Go here to see history and displays on the South and the Civil War! Great exhibits, including a cannon, cannonballs, rifles, weapons used in war. Also, some original artwork from that era, exhibits of tools, appliances and furnishings they used back then. Surprised to see an actual mummy display (found in Egypt)...kind of spooky! The museum is free, and has... More

I had some time to kill and stopped in at the TN State Museum. I was intending to be underwhelmed. Afterall...it was free. NOT SO. This probably one of the best museum's in the South. Tastefully done with modern audio visual as well as life like dioramas. The state history and portrait gallery was a well assembled group. The Civil... More

Visit the Tennessee State Museum for a change of pace on a visit to downtown Nashville. The museum, located in the TPAC building, has three levels of exhibits covering different aspects of the history of Tennessee. It is spacious and easy to tour -- even with school groups touring at the same time. You're on your own here to tour... More

Very informative for us visitors from Scotland, we spent more time here than expected and learnt a lot more about the history of Tennessee. We loved the fact that there were lots of groups of kids being shown around, this all seems to be the norm over here, wish it was like that back home!

This museum does justice to the life of people living in Tennessee during the frontier, antebellum, the civil war and reconstruction periods. I particularly enjoyed the native american artifacts of which there were many; some of these are over 10,000 years old and these are very expertly described! For those who like to see old war uniforms, this place will... More

We found the Tennessee State Museum to be very interesting and well presented. There were a lot of artifacts from the antebellum and Civil war period representing Tennessee people and participation. To me, the most interesting display was the Indian artifacts. We had no idea they made such intricate pots, reminding us of the Peruvian Indian pots. There were also... More

I was quite surprised to find there was no fee for the Museum. It's a good sized museum with plenty of history about Tennessee and the general region. They have some great artifacts and some special displays for children.
