Love the rainforest zoo compared to all others. If your visiting Hilo with kids, stop over and take a break at this free zoo. We enjoy having our lunch here. It's not too huge where it will take up too much time, so we like that the best!!!!!

The signature white tiger was inside today recuperating and so that was a disappointed. Otherwise, the birds and monkeys are in old-style cages so that was sad. Quiet setting and nice to walk around but just average....
My mom and I visited the Panaewa Zoo and were surprised to first find out is is free. The staff explained that it's part of the Hilo park system and it's important for the local kids to have some exposure to other animals from around the world. If they charged, only tourists would be able to afford to visit and...

It was actually raining the day we went so could have quite possibly affected our experience, however, the animals were few and far between. Lots of cages, difficult to see the animals. Lots of birds, 1 butterfly in the butterfly house, no tigers to be seen. Gardens were pretty.
Although difficult to see through the thick wire cage I did...

It's slightly closer to a botanical garden if you get to looking around, but that is in most part because it's located in an actual rain forest and the largest furry attraction is a lone white tiger appropriatley dubbed 'Namaste'. There are a wide variety of tropical birds and Pacific island native species. This is probably the most family friendly...

We called into the zoo to quell our curiousity. This zoo is a great place to relax. It is not very big and has a variety of animals. The only down side to it is the animals are in cages with very thick wire. Hard to get a good view and to take photos. The area was pristine with not...

We stopped at this zoo on our drive from Hilo to Volcano. I can't say that I would plan a day around the zoo, but it is a fun break as you drive higway 11 from the Hilo airport to the town of volcano.
Yep, we had rain, but it may the visit even better. Rain is a good thing...

As part of a cruise ship tour I had the opportunity to spend a little time at this lovely little zoo. There wasn't very much to see that day and some of the animals (like the tiger) were inside but surprisingly enough there was such a peace and unspoiled harmony there that it didn't matter. I have been to many...

I must say this is one of the oddest zoos I have ever been to. It was nice enough especially for the price but it seemed to have no order to it. Vultures next to primates and then a lizard or a Donkey. A nice place to go with kids when it is to cold for the beach.
We had a very nice time. Got caught in the rain but that is the norm for this area. Great place to take the kids. Use a stroller for the little ones. A lot of walking....
