This hike is supposed to be 12.3 miles and by the time we were done it was 19 miles!
The trail is by the cemetery behind Koele Lodge. The signs point to Koloiki Ridge Trail so we knew that was a branch off trail from the Munro. However, there were many different trails without signs! We had to hike the Koloiki Ridge since we were here so we did that and we were not disappointed. We now had to find the Munro Trail and we finally found it at 1:30. We saw a sign as we walked about 800 meters so we knew we were finally on it. It’s just a 4x4 road and now that I did the whole thing I would tell people it was very boring! There was a lot of cloud cover so we didn’t see much and the last 4 miles were very long and boring. I would suggest the Koloiki Ridge Trail. The Munro Trail is off limits to vehicles so that is the one nice thing about the trail. I wouldn’t want to hike and share the road with off road vehicles.

Larry Ellis has now banned vehicles up the trail. Must either bike or hike. Worth it to hike. If you don't have the time to do entire trail there is a lookout about 2.5 miles up.

We did not get to do the whole trail. They had it closed for maintenance about 1/2 the way up. What we did see was beautiful. The road is unsaved, rutted, and very rocky. A 4-wheel drive is definitely needed. Had a good time.

We had never done the whole drive due to spotty weather and road conditions, this year we got lucky! Our Jeep rental guy came with and said, "Why not?". Good Jeep skills needed, but fun. Windy but spectacular, sights most don't get to see. Views from the top of the world show just what a pretty island this is. A special day we will remember forever! If you get the chance, DON'T pass this up!! Thanks MikeE!!!!!

Absolutely fantastic views after a steep climb, makes the Monroe Trail absolutely a must. We came across virtually noone on our way.
From first viewpoints could see Mauri & Molokai islands. Next picnic spot down to the sea on the other side, then Lanai city & ending in the Caldera on the road to the Harbour. Moderate walk, about 6 hours unhurriedly walking 🚶♀️

If you've made the trip to Lana'i and you have a Jeep, go on this trail. Check conditions before you go and have some 4WD experience. Lots to see on a fun drive. Turn east and south off of Keomuku Hwy just a bit north of Lana'i City for as far as the road will let you...

Today, March 4, 2017, we successfully hiked the entire Munro trail. We started at the trailhead for the Koloiki trail, which is located to the right of the Lodge at Koele (and to the left of the closed, golf shop). The Koloiki trail is well marked with green signs. At the green sign #8, the trail joins the Munro trail. At sign #12, stay on the jeep trail and continue following it. The Munro trail is a double track jeep trail. However, it is currently closed to jeep traffic, but can still be hiked. I suggest bringing lots of water, a poncho, and hiking poles. Also, only attempt this hike if you are physically able to hike 12+ miles with elevation changes. The hike follows the ridge at the very highest point of the island. So, you are likely to encounter rain, fog and sun. If sunny, there are great views of Maui and Molokai. The trail was in good shape except in the middle, approximately miles 5-8. During this segment we had several 15-20 foot sections with large mud puddles that we needed to avoid by walking along the brush. At the end of the trail, you finally reach the main pine tree-lined main road. It took us over 6 hours to hike this trail. To get back to town, call Rabaca taxi service and they will pick you up.

Initially planned to only do Koloiki Trail but weather was great and that hike was quicker than expected, so continued up Munro Trail to reach Mount Lana`ihale. Make sure you have enough water and be prepared for ankle deep mud pits, at least, if it has been raining somewhat recently. Beautiful views along the road most of the way.

The Munro trail is a great way to catch a view of the entire Island and views of the channel , Maui and Molokai . On a clear day , you can get excellent views of the Big Islands 2 great mountain tops, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea . If adventurous enough , go up before sunrise and catch a whole new perspective of sunrise over Haleakala from the mountain top , Lanai Hale or a view of the sunset . If not comfortable with a 4 wheel drive up what could be very steep and slippery dirt road , take a local tour trip . You get first hand looks at the diversity of fauna on this trip . From the upland desert like area around the Twin Peak area on the eastern to the lush upland rain forest like vegetation at the top . And during whale watching season, you can often see pods of Humpbacks spouting and breaching in the channel . It's a nature lovers dream to be able to see all this in a drive that takes only a couple of hours . Bring a light jacket . After all , its a mountain just 5 miles from the ocean . You look south and can see Palawai basin , which is a volcanic crater and home of what once was the largest pineapple plantation in the world . A 2-3 day trip is all that you need to see the whole island , unless you want to stay and enjoy the cool upland and slow paced country life that the island is known for . You want the touristy Hawaii ? Stay in Waikiki . You want a restful and serene Hawaii. come to Lanai . It's a side trip worth the few days that you spend here .

Munro Trail goes up the ridge behind Lanai City. Hikers and people who rent Jeeps try it just for something to do. That's not a good idea. It rains up there. The dirt road gets incredibly muddy. There are 1000 foot drop offs. You don't need it.
