When I was a little girl, my best friend's mom was the secretary of the director of the Pioneer Museum, forerunner of the Ventura County Museum of History & Art. Gone are the big glass cases and all the personal memorabilia of the old families. This small but beautifully organized museum presents exhibits pertinent to our time and locale. Local... More

The Ventura County Museum of History and Art is the front line in Ventura's battle to overcome the image problem Ventura has when contrasted to its richer and more sophisticated neighbor, Santa Barbara. Ventura's best weapon in this struggle is the world-class display of George Stuart historical figures at the museum. With many on permanent display, and many others traveling... More

The Ventura County Museum is a good place to learn about both the flora and fauna of the coast and Ventura's history. In particular it often has special programs in its new exhibition hall. An example was the recent presentation of live Raptors, hawks and owls, by the Ojai Raptor Center. The program was effective for both children and adults.... More

The George Stuart miniatures rooms was a hit. The nearby fountain and park is also fun to add on.

Enjoyed a gallery full of originals by children's book illustrator Simm Taback, then was mesmerized by the delicate and stunning mannequins representing historical figures from the Victorian age. Exhibits change often, so when you go you'll see something different than what I saw; but I trust curators will give you something equally as enchanting as what I viewed.

It is worth the time to stop in and visit this museum if you are in Ventura. Be sure to see the George Stuart collection of historic dolls. It is located on Main St. near many restaurants, antique and thrift stores, movie theater, and the San Buenaventura Mission.

The newly expanded facility houses a wonderful collection of art and historical artifacts dating back to the native Indian populations of Ventura. The name of the museum has recently changed to Museum of Ventura County. Some maps show the former temporary location when you search on-line so be sure to go to the proper address on Main Street near the... More
