These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden. « less

Unbelievable mansion settings and grounds in the five mansions we visited. The Newport Preservation Society has done an awesome job in keeping up the one-of-a-kind mansions in the area. A piece of history of the country we are certainly glad we visited, and fortunate to still have to view. More

If the "summer cottages" are not the top attraction in Newport, it's because several are also listed separately. First, let me recommend seeing several. The most prudent way is to purchase a membership in the Preservation Society. A dual membership ($75) allows two people to see any of the mansions (except Doris Duke's Rough Point), the Elms' Servants Tour, and... More

The homes on the Newport Mansion tour are impeccably preserved and the narrative that goes along with the tour is very informative. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. One hint is to save The Breakers for last. It is so spectacular, that if you do it first, all will pale by comparison. More

We toured three of the amazing mansions, The Breakers, RoseCliff, and The Elms. The audio tours were very well done, and you can go along at your own pace. The grounds are beautiful and well worth the time. More

The Breakers is the most important one to see - it is gorgeous and right on the water. More

After hearing about all these fabulous mansions of the rich & famous, we decided to go. You truly have to see them to believe it!! They were spectacular!! There is a walkway along the ocean so you can walk and see since many of them are not open to the public. The walkway is rocks for some of the distance... More

My wife and I were particularly fond of the Breakers, Marble House and the Elms. We also enjoyed Rosecliff and Chateau Sur Mer. You can obtain a pass for admission to 5 mansions. The servants' tour at the Elms is also a must. More
