These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden. « less

The mansion tour is a must see or anyone interested in history and how the wealthy lived during the "Gilded Age". The "Breakers " Vanderbilt summer was especially awesome and jaw dropping in its splendor. It really shows what can happen to people that have too much money and free time on their hands. But despite all of the conspicuous... More

I purchased the tickets to tour 5 mansions and it was a great experience. We toured the Breakers, Rose Cliff (My favorite- Due to the Great Hall and the layout), The Marble House, The Elms, and Chateau- Sur- Mer. There were many more properties that we could have visited but we ran out of time. The Chateau was a guided... More

Every time we see the mansions we see new things. This time we saw it through the eyes of our English friend. It was the day after Memorial Day and there was no traffic and no waiting in line at any of the mansions. Unfortunately, we only got to see three of them, but they were best! The mansions made... But seriously, I had a blast at the Breakers. I dragged by boyfriend and we spent about 1.5 hours touring the gardens and the house. I listened to every second of the audio tour, and looked in every nook and cranky and listened to all the audio extras. I had such a fabulous time and I would have stayed longer... More

Although my husband and I are both from New England, we had never ventured to Newport, Rhode Island. After visiting for 3 days we can't believe we waited so long to do so. We bought tickets to tour 5 mansions online before we went and it was a wonderful experience. One of the mansions was a guided tour by a... More

We had a wonderful time touring 5 of these amazing properties in one day...The Breakers is jaw-dropping...Marble House, The Elms and Rosecliff aren't far behind in gilded opulence...Kingscote is a great example of Victorian style living...It's hard to believe these were 'summer cottages' for the wealthy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries...We did the audio tours that allow... We visited Newport RI with some dear friends this rainy weekend. A great pick to see the Doris Duke mansion. She was a real part of our era and lived life to her rules. I guess when you are that wealthy you can make most rules you want. A touch of shopping (just enough to keep the women happy) and... More

We visited Memorial weekend 2013. We bought the annual membership as it allows you to revisit all year (we wanted to see The Breakers again after seeing all the others). These mansions are the American version of the chateaus in the Loire Valley. It is worthwhile to visit them all, however if time was limited, the must sees are in... More

We visited The Breakers, Cheteau Sur Mer and the Elms. All were very good, but we especially liked Chateau Sur-Mer for all the antique personal items, photos and collections. I wish we could have lingered longer as you can with the audio tours. The docent kept the group moving.

We visited 3 mansions, The Breakers, Marble House, & The Elms. The audio guides for each were excellent. For Marble House & The Elms it took about 30 minutes. For The Breakers it was longer. At The Elms, we did the Servant Tour. It costs an additional $15 per person but was well worth the cost. You're taken to the... More
