There are also Malay daggers (keris), Chinese furniture, embroidery and paintings of old Penang. At the Penang State Museum there are also interesting sections which recounts the bloody nine days of rioting between Chinese secret societies in 1867, attributed by bewildered British authorities to a rambutan-throwing incident. Georgetown suffered a near civil war before the administrators took a firm hand. The societies were heavily fined and the proceeds used to build police stations which subsequently kept the peace. The Penang State Art Gallery on the other hand is situated at a different premise which is at Dewan Sri Pinang, Light Street, a stone thrown away from the Museum premise . There are two Art Galleries which is situated in Dewan Sri Pinang. The Art Gallery on the Ground floor displays the works of local artists and is the venue for special exhibitions meanwhile the exhibition hall at the 3rd Floor housed the Permanent Collection which comprises of paintings donated or bought from the artists. « less

At first we thought the museum would be on the small side, but once we got inside and saw how extensive the museum was we were in for a treat! Great storytelling of the beginnings of Penang, British Colonial history, WWII occupation, and post-war independence. Very well done exhibits with great captions in English. Also excellent exhibits on the ethnic... More

It is such a boring museum with few artefacts & dimly lit halls that you can't stay inside more than 15 minutes.Since they don't have a history so everything starts from the English founder"Francis Light" & ends there!! More

This museum is worth a visit for tourists. It is all about the history of Penang state as a part of British settlement beside Melacca and Singapore. Air conditioned but relatively small museum compared to others. 1-2 hours just enough for this two-story museum building. RM1 entrance fee. Car park available but limited space. More
