However, 17 of the original 37 hobbit holes and some structures from the film set are still present. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm, we also offer you an authentic and unforgettable Sheep Farm Experience. See how the shearer cleverly handles the sheep, plus take the opportunity to cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs. You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in The Shires Rest Cafe, which is also available for functions, conferences or other occasions. We very much look forward to welcoming you at the Hobbiton Movie Set & Farm! Because we got lost on the way, we had no choice but to take the last tour which was at 4:05pm which was lucky as there were only a few people on this last tour (the tours before came & left in busloads). The hour-long wait before the tour started gave us enough time to shop for souvenirs and have... More

If you're a Lord of the Rings fan like me, it's likely you planned your trip visiting all the filming locations. You have to go to Matamata and visit the hobbit set. I went back in March 2009 and they had already taken down the decorations around the hobbit holes, but you still felt like you were in Hobbiton. The... More

Decided to visit on the spur of the moment while travelling through Matamata and so glad I did. This experience was amazing, guide very informative about the filming of the Lord of the Ring Trilogy and The Hobbit and she described the scenes so well, you could visualise what was happening without being a Tolkien fan. Enjoyed hearing the lengths... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hobbiton as we are Tolkien fans and know the books and movies well. However, this venue would be interesting for anyone who is interested in the enormous lengths movie makers go to in order to bring their movie to life. The tour was well organised and timed, with an excellent guide who paced the... More

For the tour alone, I would have given Hobbiton Tours 5 stars. However, because of the fact that the The Shire's Rest cafe (which the website and brochure say would be the best place to eat before or after the tour) was CLOSED when we got there, I can only give it 4. We rushed from Rotorua to enjoy a... More

My wife and I visited Hobbiton during our visit to NZ from the UK. Fantastic experience, our guide was most informative and professional, willing to photograph any member of the group who so required. The entry price was worth every cent, and we would visit again. Thank you team, and the Alexander family. Gil and Pauline Ben-Ari More

I had read in past years the set dressings had been removed since the original trilogy, leaving unadorned white holes in the hills, but we visited after the entire set had been remade for the Hobbit film, and it couldn't have been more fantastic. LOTR nerds and movie buffs may find the tour guide's trivia to be rudimentary at best,... More

The set was wonderful and magical. The tour guide at the site was very knowledgeable. Be advised that doing a tour out of surrounding town requires a trek there. We were promised a lunch but none was available when we went. There is a little store that sold food at one time but seems to be little more than a... More

A day road trip from Auckland to Matamata but I had a wonderful time. Great Hobbiton Movie Set Tour, love it and The Lord of the Rings. Beautiful scenery and lovely valley full of sheeps. More

I suppose my review is tinted as far as when we visited the set had been entirely recreated as filming was due to start the week after we visited the site in September 2011. It was amazing afternoon spent in the shire. The set was recreated from scratch and new hobbit holes where inserted. It was easy to spot parts... More
