"It was an awesome hike to the top of Mount Alvernia but once you got up, the view was breathtaking! The Hermitage itself was once of amazement. A must see when visiting Cat Island. "
"Such a beautiful place with all the stations. There is a guest book in the chapel to sign. There are steps or a dirt road to reach the top. We took the steps up but the road down as they are steep."
"There are many historical landmarks on Cat Island. Several are yet to be excavated. The Hermitage is the most famous and distinctive. In fact it is one of the best in all the Bahamas. I have walked up and taken many people to the Hermitage many times over the last 8 years. It is very accessible with..." a paved road leading up to the base of where it was built on top of Mount Alvernia being the highest elevation of all the Bahamas. So its a two for one experience.
There are two ways to get to the top. A cleared pathway can be taken that is a longer distance but less treacherous then the scenic stairway path. Good walking shoes are important and your camera is a must. Coordinate your visit so you can have lunch or dinner at the waterfront cafe Blue Bird which is a minute down the main road from where the turn is to the Hermitage. You have not experienced Cat Island without both a visit to the Hermitage and a bite at the Blue Bird.
