"While visiting Nanaimo, we took a day-trip to the Horne Lake Caves. After getting off the main highway, we had about 10 km of an unpaved, uneven, gravelly and pot-holed road to get to the caves. (we almost turned back on a couple occasions, but decided if we'd come this far, we should continue on)

They offer tours a couple times a day, and we had a bit of a wait for the next tour – while waiting, we walked across a suspension bridge and up a hill to poke our heads in to the “main” cave – very narrow entrance and too dark to go into without lights.
We were the only ones on our tour – our guide and a guide-in-training outfitted us with helmets and head-lamps, and went through the safety procedures. We then climbed up the forested Karst trail for approx 25 minutes, going back and forth on a razorback path – fairly steep, and full of branches and twigs – definitely had to watch your footing, cuz a fall would not have been good.
We were heading to the Riverbend cave, to see beauti...

"This is a lovely natural setting for beautiful rhododendron gardens and a manor house and tea room. The staff is attentive and provide shuttle service from the entrance to the main garden areas for those that are unable to walk through the 1/2 mile forest pathway to the gardens. There is a wide vari..."ety of flowers and trees, many labeled so you know what you're looking at. The plantings were all done by the original owners of the site so the plants and trees are mature specimens. We enjoyed our walk through the gardens and the view of the water from the open lawn just outside the manor house. The manor house has a tea room open to the public. At the entrance to the manor house there's a guest book with a display page of Queen Elizabeth's signature and Princess Diana's signature when they registered here. A nice blend of nature and history.

"taking a trip into the caves was a personal victory for me. I have always been claustrophobic, but was assured these caves weren't small and no tight squeezes. Well the climb up there nearly killed me ( must be in better shape next time) but our guide had us stop several times to catch our breath..." and to point out things to us. We got into the caves and it was awesome. the only thing I would change is that they give their clients better lights for their heads, it was difficult to see the formations she was pointing out to us.
