Shortmead is an elegant manor house, with its origins in the 16th century and set in twenty acres of grounds. Located in Bedfordshire, it is one of Biggleswade’s best kept secrets. In a tranquil setting with open vistas and positioned on the outskirts of the town, yet the house is conveniently located just off the A1 motorway and close to a mainline railway station.

"This sort of museum can be utterly boring but the Shuttleworth Collection is definately not boring. There are a total of eight hangers, each one full of interesting exhibitits. These range from numerous full-sized planes, to a cabinet containing a fascinating collection of spark-plugs. The best feat..."ure of the museum is that every exhibit is fully and comprehensively lablelled so you know exactly what you are looking at and, with the planes, you can read their full history.
There was no flying on the day that we visited but there is still plenty to look at and enjoy. The cafe is well run and provides hot meals as well as drinks and snacks. Altogether a very enjoyable visit.

"Recently visited Wrest Park, had to view the House and Orangey before 1pm because they were to be used for a private function. Had lunch which was more than adequate and not expensive. We then decided to take a stroll around the estate garden, we were advised that there were 6 seater buggies availa..."ble driven by volunteers who were very informative, the ride around took about 35mins afternoon tea was taken before departure, an excellent day out. We were also blessed with weather that was perfect for the day. This was a group visit organised by myself, very easy to book advised where to stop coach to drop off and pick up, we were met by a member of staff who welcomed us and advised which path to take for the cafe for tea/coffee I then walked through to reception area to make payment for the group English Heritage members are free as are the driver and organiser. The coach was allowed to stay in the drop off lay by all day as we were the only coach party that day

"The gardens are lovely to walk around on a nice day. The small Italian garden borders were planted with tulips and was very colourful. The paths are well marked and it was lovely to walk among the different shrubs and trees with a few statues dotted around. There was a golf buggy type vehicle whi..."ch transported people around if they didn't want to walk. The map of the parkland is good however the distances are shorter than they seem on the map.
As the house and contents were sold in 1917 and the property was then used for various things, there are only a few rooms to visit on the ground floor and these are empty. There is a small exhibition with interactive things for children.
Visited here on the early May bank holiday and it was fairly busy. The café is quite small and we had to queue for more than 30 mins to get served. Some of the lunch menu had sold out. The café is probably adequate on most days but not at busy times so I would strongly recommend taking a picnic as y...
