Created as the perfect house in the perfect setting, Berrington has many secrets to uncover. Here in one of Henry Holland’s first houses, you can explore the family rooms and walk in the servants’ footsteps down the back stairs, moving around the house unseen by the family and guests. You will find out what happened to William Kemp, LordCawley’s butler, and discover the anguish of a grieving mother during the First World War. Alternatively why not join a below-stairs tour to see if you would have liked being a servant at Berrington?

"This was so beautiful, surrounded as it was by the blossoming damson orchards.
I love history, especially that of ordinary people, and I love vernacular architecture, so this was always going to be a winner for me. There are only four rooms open inside - the Great Hall is the best of these, with ..."an amazing roof/ceiling. I found the other rooms a little bit disappointing. (The rest of the house is lived in by a tenant, so not open to the public.) But it's the exterior that's the real winner, with those beautiful limewashed half-timbered walls, the gatehouse, the moat, and the orchards. Bring your camera - you'll want to take masses of photos!

"We were lucky in being there when the Damson orchard was in full bloom. The setting is so very peaceful and calming, and the walks around the estate are lovely. Can recommend the restaurant and you have a choice of sittig outside or in.
Overheard a couple of ladies discussing why the 'black' bits ..."of the house hadn't been painted black. Some people just do not seem to realise that oak in it's natural state is brown and centuries ago people limewashed it as is shown at Brockhampton. I believe it was the victorians who started to paint the wood black, but am willing to be put right!

"This trail is a beautiful drive around the Herefordshire countryside looking at the black and white houses that have been preserved. You can get a brochure from the tourist information office in Leominster or from your hotel. By far the best village in my opinion was Pembridge, this was absolutely..." fantastic. There are many things to look at and see on your way round and also many places to visit such as cheese factorys and cider makers.
