Built under Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD, the Roman Theatre of Orange experienced a real rebirth in 2003, transporting visitors back to Imperial Rome. The new tour and the free audioguide in seven languages tell visitors about the shows and social life in the Provencal city during Roman times. In the new projection room, the film, with computer-generated images and reconstructions of shows, retraces the history of the Roman Theatre of Orange.

"We were told that Provence has 300 sunny days per year. May 18th was not one of them with 50 mm falling in 24h. This Roman theatre was so impressive that the rain did not completely deter us. We obtained the self audio guide and tightened the hoods on our wind breakers. The scale of this theatre..." and it's backdrop are awe inspiring. We climbed to the top level for the panoramic view and took several photos. On a sunny day, we would have listened to every number on the guide, but the rain ultimately got the better of us, so we headed across the street for chocolat chaud and crepes.

"The Roman Theatre Antique is amazing in terms of its size and completeness. The stage is 76 metres high which you truly appreciate when you climb to the top of the auditorium. There is little left of the ornate features of the stage but enough has been restored to give you an idea of what it used to..." be like. We started the visit by watching the video on the history of the theatre. This was good for showing how the theatre was used, the various features and their purpose and then what happened to it over 2000 years. Within the auditorium, there are a number of rooms, each showing videos of different styles of theatre over the centuries. We used the audio guides which were also very useful for explaining every aspect of the theatre and its history although it did repeat quite a bit of the information from the introductory film. There are great views of Orange and the surrounding country from the top of the auditorium.

"The Triumphal Arch stands on the old Via Agrippa but nothing of this remains. We visited on a beautiful day which shows the Arch at its best, set amongst trees. The facade remains very ornate, although there is some weathering, to be expected after 2000 years. The underside of the three arches are t..."he best preserved with all the carving remaining intact. The Arch seems oddly out of place as a part of the Roman Empire but links to he Theâtre Antique and to other imperial remnants in France, especially the South. It is well worth a visit.
