"A VERY challenging hike but well worth the views! Lots of steps. Not for anyone out of shape. Two way traffic is tough on the cliff hanging edges! Watch out for the "professional" hikers with their stupid walking sticks...they will knock you off like it is THEIR own personal path."
"We were staying in Monterosso al Mare so starting from there, this is the first leg of the trail. The trail was closed after Corniglia so we walked one more leg after this one and then continued by train and took the ferry back.
We are a couple in our mid sixties and fairly active. We both have ..."some physical issues but we had been able to do some hiking on our trip in the weeks before Monterosso. We were told it was difficult but did not really know what that meant. It is all relative after all.
The difficulty is two fold.
1. There are a lot of stairs to climb and then descend at the other end.We started out right after breakfast to have the cooler part of the day and it was also not that hot this year. It was a nice day and got warmer in the afternoon. Especially if it is hot, take water.
2. While there are lots of railings. there are also spots where the trail is narrow and there is a drop off and no guardrail. Take it easy. Respect your fellow hikers and dress for it. I saw...

"This is a fantastic trail (without a guard rail when we were actually there in 2007) and would never be allowed in the US due to liability issues. A great walk along the sea."
