"My husband and I wanted to go to Cinque Terre but after looking up hotels there, we decided we should stay somewhere outside the area that had a little more to offer in terms of hotel options and restaurants. We decided to stay in Santa Margherita Ligure and it was a fantastic choice. Even though ..."the train ride to Cinque Terre is about an hour, it's still close enough that I would recommend this as a base for visiting those towns. We stayed at the end closer to Portofino and would walk all the way to the train station (which only took 20 mins.) It was a beautiful walk along the water and the boat harbor, passing restaurants, shops, etc and felt very safe. There's also a bus that you can take around the town if you get tired of walking. Overall it was a quiet, relaxing place filled with locals (unlike Cinque Terre which was filled with mostly young kids studying abroad that wanted to go hiking.) I'm glad I chose to stay in this quaint, quiet town.

"We were in Santa Margherita Ligure on April 27th & 28th, 2013.It is a lovely town. The promenade facing the sea is long with lots of good restaurants. Boats for Portofino, San Fruttuso Abbey and the Cique Terre villages leave from the pier. Bus to Portofino is convenient. The train station is up the..." hill, but a short-cut from the main road,( Via Stazione , actually steps ) lead right to the station from where the Cinque Terre trains can be caught. My Hotel Villa Anita had free parking, great for me since I was driving a rental car. Rappalo is too huge. Hotels here are more reasonable. Loved it there.
