The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

The Museum of Cycladic Art is a private living cultural institution in the heart of Athens. More than 3.000 objects of Cycladic, Ancient Greek and Cypriot art (dating from the 5th millennium BC to the 6th century AD) are displayed in the galleries of the four floors of the Museum of Cycladic Art. This summer the museum also hosts two contemporary art exhibitions by artists Jannis Kounelis and Ugo Rondinone. The museum can be accessed either from the entrance from the Stathatos Mansion (1 Irodotou Str & Vasilissis Sofias Avenue) or from the entrance at 4 Neofytou Douka Str & Vasilissis Sofias Avenue.

"The museum is placed in a very new, modern building. The third floor is very airy and the exposition is placed very well. The ground floor is also o.k. But the second floor is used only for restaurant, gift shop and reading area. I would expected, that the awesome space will be used more."
"If you are not going to Crete to see many Minoan treasures, make sure to visit the Benaki, if only to see the Evia Treasure dating from 3000-2800BC. Specifically there are three cups two of gold and one of silver which are simply exquisite in their simple, refined beauty and craftsmanship. One can l..."ook at these for a very long time, as well as the signet rings and tiny gold ornaments which are in the same display. Seeing these cups, one thinks perhaps that true beauty, at its utmost, is almost always in refined simplicity and every additional ornamentation, superfluous and beyond the point. Too, don't miss the Mid-18th Century Reception Room from the Ottoman times and the adjacent Room from Kozani of the same period. Looking at these, one can easily imagine the opulence at the height of the Ottoman Empire. A favorite of mine, too, is the 17thC painting by Theodoros Poulakis entitled "In Thee Rejoiceth" and "The Last Judgment" an iconographic painting reminiscent of Bosch and Breugel, r...

To have the complete experience I recommend you visit the Acropolis Museum before visiting the site, so you can imagine and understand better how it was in the past. The Museum is Only 300m away from the Acropolis !
Buy the entry that ..."includes the other monuments (the ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Kerameikos, Theatre of Dionysos, Hadrian’s Library Tower of the Winds and theTemple of Olympian Zeus) the entrance ticket is €12.
The easiest way to reach the Acropolis is by metro which is a few meters away. Get it the sooner you can so many people not arrived yet and the sun is not so hot.
A long climb awaits you until you reach the top, go with comfortable clothes and shoes and do not forget to take water with you.
