With 2 million hectares, it is the biggest National Reserve of Peru, also it is the largest protected flooded forest of the world and one of the richest places in biological wealth on the planet. Between its biological diversity we find 449 of tropical bird species, 102 of mammals, 256 known species of freshwater fish, 69 of reptiles and more than 1000 varieties of plants, as well as species in danger of extinction like the giant otter, the black lizard, the manatee and the pink dolphin of the Amazon. The place's beauty, as well as its biological wealth makes the reserve a particularly important destination for scientific investigators, nature lovers and bird watchers. The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve stands out among Peru's natural protected areas. Located in the Department of Loreto, in the provinces of Loreto, Requena, Ucayali and Alto Amazonas, with an extension of more than 8000 square miles, it is considered one of the largest of South America, holding an spectacular diversity of flora and fauna including endangered species as the black spider monkey (Ateles paniscus), the wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagoticha) and the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis).

THE #1 place to see wild life in their natural habitat. No wild life in domestic conditions for tourist entretainment.Tapiche Ohara Reserve is deep inside primary rain forest. As conservators, we have a commitment to responsible conservation practices. Moreover, we continually endeavor to expand our conservation efforts while providing low impact tourism to the Peruvian Amazon.Accessible only by waterway, the 1540 hectare Reserve is situated 404 km up river from Iquitos, Peru. The day long journey into the jungle takes you through increasingly remote areas, away from touristic centers, and into territory seldom traveled by outsiders. The trip from Iquitos to the Reserve includes navigating up the Amazon, Ucayali, and Tapiche Rivers.

The Amazon Golf Course is a difficult nine hole adventure with a par 5. It's not so much birdies and eagles; more like boas in the rough, caiman sunning in the sand traps, piranhas lurking in the water holes. It is the only course in the world where golfers are issued a machete to carry in their golf bag. Please, avoid the anaconda. The Amazon Golf Course is Pay and Play Golf at $25 for 18 holes, includes 12 balls, clubs, and machete, additional balls $1 per ball.

"This market is a visual smorgasbord of the extreme sort - a delight nonetheless. Possibly any conceivable item that can be sold - can be found here.
I have one friendly caution to pass on. The market is a pickpocket's haven. But really with a healthy dose of vigilance - you can navigate the pl..."ace easily. My best suggestions is to leave your purse & wallet locked up at the hotel. Your passport also stays at the hotel. I only keep a photocopy of my passport in my pocket (I do that for practically everywhere. My passport is only produced at the airport, at immigration, and when exchanging money (many of them do ask). Bring just enough soles for perhaps some souvenirs (if that's your thing) or purchase freshly blended juice perhaps and the motokarra ride back.
Like others on TA have said -- PLEASE DO NOT purchase hunted or endangered animals. You may run into caiman, monkeys, birds (and their feathers), eggs and turtles to mention a few. Heartbreaking indeed.

"Here they show you the whole life cycle of the butterfly with many different species to see at all stages, we saw lots of strange looking caterpillars and then lots of beautiful butterflies. The part I enjoyed the most was the animal orphanage where they rescue and rehabilitate animals. Some of them..." they try to introduce back into the wild, but if that's not possible they keep them there and look after them. We saw a jaguar being fed, very exciting! The animals were well looked after. The volunteer that took us around gave us lots of very interesting information and the staff were all very friendly.

"What a hidden little adventure gem is Pilpintuwasi, it's a must visit when you are in Iquitos. Book a tour or take a motor-taxi 3 -4 soles each way to the little port village just 10 a minute ride. Then catch a boat down the river to this amazing hideaway (30 soles return, 15 minute trip). A short ..."5 minute walk through the bush and suddenly you are upon this wonderful butterfly farm....but not only butterflies, but monkeys, exotic birds, parrots, a jaguar, even a puma.
The staff are amazing, most volunteers, really dedicated, really friendly and chatty, they give great tours, both interesting and informative. Thanks guys.
I can certainly recommend this trip, it's one of the nicest things i did in Iquitos.
