This tadpole-shaped rock island is the largest of five islandsbetween the historical Bataan and Cavite shores. Some geologists theorize that Corregidor was once part of a huge volcano that erupted on one side and gradually eroded to become partly invisible beneath the sea. It is called "The Rock" because it served as the major bastion of Philippine's Allies during World War II.

When the Franciscans' mother church in Intramuros was destroyed in the closing days of World War II, they built their new Santuario (sanctuary) de San Antonio and installed a statue of Saint Anthony that had survived the bombing of their old beloved church. Many of Manila's wealthy families reside in nearby Forbes Park and Dasmarinas Village, so this church is where most of their christenings, weddings and funerals take place.

"This is well worth a visit. Very historic and lots of information available as you walk around. But bring some sun shade as it becomes absolutely roasting and there is little shade. "
"Intramuros is my favorite place to go to when in need for long solitary walks while remaining in the city. One feels as if he/she is transported to Manila's colonial past.
The place gets flooded easily though on rainy days.
"
"I've walked the streets of Binondo alone many times before but I still have yet to memorize the streets. Lots of authentic Chinese restaurants and food stores here. Ride a calesa; it's fun and the clickety sound of the horse's hooves on the ground are quite welcome to the ears.
The ugly part is tha..."t the area is too crowded and there are just too many cars. And then there's the smell of horse manure which is ubiquitous (and which I consider as that distinct feature of Binondo).
