Most travelers head straight for the ancient city of Dali, also known as Dali Gucheng. The old city is where the three pagodas and Foreigner's Street are located, while Erhai lake is closer to the new city.

"We did the Tea Horse Road from Dali to Shaxi over two days. We found Adam very helpful while planning our trip over email and found it to be excellent value for money for only two people to have a guide, support car and accommodation and meals covered during our trip.
Our guide Phillip was very h..."elpful and had good local knowledge and was passionate about cycling and made for great company during our two day ride. Accommodation on both nights was above average as well with toilets and shower in the rooms.
Only word of warning is that you should be confident in you cycle fitness as it is a mountainous region with a lot of uphill riding and it took every ounce of willpower and energy we had to finish the second day as we were both not regular long haul bike riders. "This place is heaven on earth!
It's a tiny town in the middle of a valley. It's not easy to get there, you have to catch at least 2 buses from wherever you go. But it's really worth it. The old town is just 4 or 5 streets. They keep the same style they used to have houndreds of years ago, when the t..."own was a stop on the route of silk and tea.
When you stand on the main square, in front of the old theatre, you can feel the peace of the town and the fresh mountain air. You can spend the whole day in the little caffes, and feel like time hasn't passed, and you're in a movie.
The best thing of all, there are no chinese tourists!! So this place keeps authentic, no souvenir stores, no hawkers... You can walk 150mts and you're in the countryside. There are lots of towns nearby, and you'll definately see the rural chinese life as it really is.
This place is soooo much nicer than Dali. Actually, in Trip Advisor this should be the town, and Dali the atraction...

"The city was surprisingly quiet maybe because March is a low season. There were nothing much ado but the lesser crowd make the place a little rustic and charming. I had tea on a quiet long afternoon, mingled with the locals at the wet market and explore the many food stalls along the alleys. "
