"Quiet location and extensive remains of an abbey although Rievaulx is more complete. Just opposite the Abbey Inn (now owned and run by English Heritage) has just opened as a tea room/café. Very pleasant staff, lovely lunches and home made cakes etc available Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holi..."days.

"Byland Abbey ruins from the road from Wass looks nothing. You could drive past and not stop for a closer look and you would miss a gem. This would have been one majestic abbey back in days before the dissolution. Like all these English Heritage maintained ruins this one is well maintained. Surprises..." are amongst the stones. Tread carefully and not step on history .... all is revealed when you visit. There is limited parking. The Abbey Inn over the road is ideal for refreshments.
