Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

"I've never had so much fun on a winery tour before. I've had more informative, more educational, more thorough, etc. but this was so much fun! And if you're not looking to start your own vineyard or become a sommelier, you want to have fun. We arrived for the last tour of the day and it was with ano..."ther lovely couple from the Carolinas. Our guide, Richard, was obviously winding down and not pretentious at all. I honestly thought this was weird at first, since most every other tour I had been on in Napa had been proper and stuffy at times. Then the owner popped out and was just as irreverent as our guide! I was able to unwind and just relax and have fun. Their wines were very delicious and it was the first time on a tasting that i did not throw any out (this was the first and only tasting we did that day so i was not drunk or tipsy). Majority of our tour took place while sitting outside, right by the vines, under a tree with a chandelier (?!) and the sun to my back. how much more perfec...

"We enjoyed our day with Sam, visiting four wineries that we otherwise might not have ventured to. The day was well-timed, the lunch was just right, and in a beautiful setting, and everyone on the bus enjoyed sharing the crackers and cheeses at the end of the day.
(a brief note to Sam - Tedeschi ..."sent us home with an unsealed bottle of wine that we didn't notice until we got home and took it out of the bag. Just thought Sam should know so that he can ask for all sealed bottles next time!)

"My wife and I just took the Napa Valley Wine Train for lunch on May 20, 2013. We did the Grgich Hills Winery tour along with lunch on the train. This is a leisurely way to see NAPA valley in the comfort of an airconditioned dining car, tour an incredibly historic winery, and have a nice afternoon. ..." Lunch was very nice. I had the Pork Tenderloin which was done to perfection. My wife had the beef tenderloin, its one of their signature dishes. Service was very attentive. After about an hour for lunch, we stopped at the Grgich Winery. This is a historic winery (see the movie Bottle Shock and you will get why!). Mike Grgich (90 years young) stopped by to personally greet our tour. What a memorable experience. After about an hour at the winery and some great tastes, we boarded the train back to the station and had dessert during the hour ride back. I had creme brulee' and my wife had Tirimisu. Both items were very good. All in all, this was an enjoyable experience. There were about 25...
