"Diamond Jo Casino was quite impressive! Our visit started out on a good note when the security guard (yes, you have to be 21 to enter) provided a helpful tip - if we signed up for a player's card, we could get a room at the neighboring hotel for $59. We followed up on his suggestion, took our room..." reservation info back to the casino and received $10 in "free" money on the card. Of course, we ended up putting in $40 of our own money and played the penny machines for close to 4 hours. That was truly inexpensive entertainment! Like most casinos, Diamond Jo's has full bar service but also offers complimentary sodas and coffee. There are a number of eating places on site. We were impressed by the number of penny machines. Also impressive was how new and well maintained the casino was. Some of the local hotels do provide shuttle service, but driving in downtown Dubuque is easy and there is plenty of free parking at the casino.

"If you're in Dubuque, you need to experience the Fenelon Place Elevator. From far away, what appeared to be a stairway up a steep cliff turned out to be the 100-year-old elevator that was built by a local banker in order to easily reach his home on the cliff. For $1.50/person ($3 round trip), you ..."can ride the elevator and marvel at its engineering. My husband and I were the only ones who rode up at 8 a.m. when the tram opened. It looked like the car could hold a total of 8 people. The view from the top of Dubuque and the Mississippi River was awesome. We decided to walk back down using an easy-to-maneuver stairway located a short block to the north of the elevator.
