With a commanding view from atop a bluff, Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site is one of the best representations of early 20th Century sensibilities in the Midwest. Walk through the 31-room, 12,000-square-foot lodge built atop two natural caves by Sedalia lawyer John Homer Bothwell. You will marvel at the owner’s eclectic tastes and how a country gentlemen furnished a recreational lodge for himself and his friends. Most of the furnishings in the house are original, and the property also has a three-mile hiking and mountain biking trail.

"a little difficult for some people to manage all the stairs throughout the lodge but tour guide had informed group if taking the stairs were mandatory in order to stay with the group for the remainder of the tour"
"Visited this lodge while visiting our children at Whitman AFB. It's amazing how such a large lodge was built in the 1900's, Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enlightening. We enjoyed roaming around the grounds and the view was spectacular. The lodge sets up high on a ridge and you can se..."e for miles around. The lodge was built in stone and had three stone quarries on the property. It took 30 years to complete. The lodge is exactly like they lived in the 1900's with the original furniture. Our tour guide also told us that there are still spirits there today. She wasn't a believer until about 6 months ago when locked doors were unlocked and opened, but no one was there. It's a great place to spend a couple of hours and learn a little bit of history of this family.

"I visited the lodge on a Saturday afternoon around 1; the tours run every hour on the hour and we got there around 12:20 so had to look around a while to kill some time. There are a few walking trails, picnic areas, and a playground to hang out. The tour itself was 4 dollars, and lasted about an hou..."r. The lodge is made out of stone, so it's very cold inside compared to the outside; you might want to take a jacket or something with you. We started out as the only people on the tour, but during the 15 minute video at the beginning another family joined us, so there were only 9 of us on the tour. It was very interesting and fun, there are lots of rooms, nooks and hiding spots to find in the lodge. The guide was very informative and answered any and all questions we had. It was fun and very cool for a cheap sight seeing adventure.
