A breathtaking walk up a very steep path to the top. Well worth the climb. The views at the top are extensive over the water and terrain. Fabulous. It can get windy so hold onto your hats. Then walk down the hill. there is a chairlift for people who need it. A great shop and cafe is at the bottom of the chairlift. Time for a Devonshire tea.

The colonial heritage of Australia is fascinating, and Highfield is no exception. As the focus of the VDL Company in Tasmania, and the de facto ‘law of the land’ in the Tasmanian NW for many years after white settlement, this is indeed an historic site. Even more compelling is the restoration that has been undertaken in the past three or four decades. This site may have been lost to history had it not been for the extensive restoration and interpretive signage that has taken place and given Highfield a new lease on life with Parks & Wildlife. The photos of the buildings in the 1980s give testament to the work that been undertaken. And it’s not just the house - the outbuildings were used variously as the local church, school, with barns, stables and boiling house (next to the styles). Entry is usually $15 per person, although free on the day we arrived (something about a power outage and no eftpos facilities). There’s plenty of parking, and a small rose garden. You’d be crazy not to visit if you’re in the area.

This is a delightful experience, we stood at the end of the wooden platform, this is where most of the birds walked up from the sea.
I recommend a torch over using a phone with cellophane a torch is way better and the phone light annoyed people and no one internally wants to do that.
Well worth it, they are very cute

This is a walk the whole family can do & by the Sea with ocean views galore & in a quaint country town setting. Quaint little stores are dotted everywhere & it is a nice day out in the freshest air you could imagine.

You simply must go to the Nutt at Stanley and go on the chairlift. Amazing views in a beautiful little village. the walk around the Nutt was incredible.

Towards the end of the row, Joe Lyons Cottage, managed by Tasmanian National Parks but manned by volunteers, sits in all its humility. It was the birthplace of the former Premier of Tasmania and Prime Minister of Australia. A tiny two or three bedroom dwelling, it has be restored lovingly and there is plenty of information about Lyons and his even more estimable wife, Dame Edith Lyons, the first female member of the House of Representatives. A remarkable lady. I particularly liked the picture of then Prime Minister Lyons, standing on the deck of the ship bringing him home to Australia, with a little, ringleted Shirley Temple holding his hand.

Friendly, efficient, helpful, outstanding local knowledge and, patience, when we sought to book a Bruny Island tour. Made a number of calls to her connections and we were soon booked with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys for the full day tour and pick-up at Kettering. There is an extensive range of brochures and pamphlets and staff that are prepared to go that extra yard for us tourists. If you arrive in Stanley and are unprepared, head into the Information Centre, you won't be disappointed.

This lookout is located on Dovecote Lane, less than a five minute drive from Highfield House. There is quite a large car park and an elevated viewing stand on the opposite side of the road to the car park. Unfortunately the viewing stand is further away from the Nut than the car park and the view from the top is obstructed by power lines.

There is also a monument that has a model of a biplane sitting on a stone pedestal dedicated to Arthur Leonard Long who was an Australian aviator and the first person to fly from Tasmania across Bass Strait to the mainland. He flew from Stanley to Torquay, Victoria on 17 December 1919 Boulton Paul P.9 biplane.

It is not clear to me as to the deeds of H.A. (Jimmy) Lane.

Wonderful local museum showcasing the town and with emphasis on local families since establishment. The building itself is historic, St Paul's Church former Parish Hall, and has been home to the museum since 1973. The displays reflect Stanley's past with various relics, antiques, memorabilia, photographs, documents and a genealogy centre from 1804 to the 1900's. The enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteer ladies was exceptional.

Great lookout on the way into Stanley to take that good old selfie overlooking The Nut. With a little viewing platform you will always get a perfect shot with The Nut in the background

I arrived here late in the afternoon on an overcast day. It is exceptionally easy to locate and has a huge carpark... because the beach is curved... I believe it would protect you from extreme weather changes. There is a toilet block nearby and there is a monument here to learn about the local area.

The beach invites you to slip down for a few moments and enjoy the solitude. There was no-one else on the beach the day I was there... there was one other male in a car in the carpark (probably escaping from having to go home to mow lawns or something :) ).
