Whether you buy into the elaborate theories about Knights Templar and Masonic connections or not, the elaborate (and often symbolic) carvings that festoon the place are magnificent, and the guides make visits both entertaining and informative. A ritzy new visitor centre offers lots of touch-screen technology, letting you see the carvings close up, helping to reduce disappointment that interior photography is prohibited.
