"You will read many review about this attraction. If you are healthy DO NOT HESITATE,. First the crew is really professional and know what they are doing. They love their job and the volcano which they know a lot about so ask them questions. Yes, the sea is rough (we had a calm morning, we were lucky...") but they do tell you about it, and if you have back pain think about it. If you follow what they say, you will be fine. The lava...(there was a lot.... we were also lucky) we get so close and you can feel the heat and the power of mother nature. I was an amazing experience and I would do it again. Bravo to the crew and to their seriousness.

"Captain Gene runs a thoughtful, comfortable, lengthy, and unforgettable tour to view the lava flowing into the ocean of the Puna coast. The ship left promptly at 5pm and the ride out to the lava was fast and fun, with spectacular views of the jungle, black cliff,s and black sand beaches along the c..."oast. Comfortable, well-padded seats (securely bolted down to the boat) made the ride through this choppy water an adventure, not a trial. The weak-of-stomach should consider dramamine, however! Once we arrived, the good captain gave us over 45 minutes of viewing and videoing, circling back repeatedly and exploring several different inflow sites. We were only about 40-50 ft away from the lava! The wall of heat, the floating and sizzling chunks of lava, the hot-tub feel of the ocean water, and of course the spectacular molten display make this an experience not to be missed!

"My family has been enjoying these tide pools and coral reefs for many years now. We find it easiest to negotiate the rough lava between pools when the tide is high. Large schools of many types of fish abound. Purple, orange and yellow corals light up the underwater world. We have seen octopi, cr..."azy nudibranches in the evening, and even a manta ray cruising by. Happily, none of the horribly painful black sea urchins seem to live there! The pools are large and deep with occasional vents of heated water adding to the fun. Be sure to bring protective gear. The lava rocks can be vicious. A walking stick is useful for the walk out to the best entry points. Be sure and head South to the Wai Opae Marine Conservation District for the best snorkeling. The ocean breaking about a quarter mile out is gorgeous for anyone in your party who prefers sunbathing and gazing at the translucent tourquoise waves.
