While the mine tour is very atmospheric--had hat on and down below ground--I was struck by the grandeur of the Gate of Charles IV on the approach to the mine. Built in 1795, mining operations were conducted beyond it. It is unusual to find such fine neoclassical architecture in an industrial setting.

a visit to this mine and museum is a must. It explains a lot about the history of the village. The guides were very knowledgable and helpful, taking time to explain things and answer questions in English.

One of the oldest bull rings in the country, its hexagonal shape is unit. It had incorporated within it 24 new houses in the 18th century, revenue therefrom helping to build the Real Hospital de Mineros of San Rafael, the world’s first occupational diseases hospital. The arena holds 4,000 spectators. Not sure if the restaurant therein is a victim of covid or not.

More striking than the jail was the concept behind it, designed to house state prisoners, slaves and gypsies, all of whom were to work in the local mines. The jail was built in 1754, the practice of forced labour in the mines ending in 1799.

Revenue from bullfighting festivals and twenty four new houses helped to build this facility, the first hospital in the world for occupational diseases. It was constructed from 1755 to 1773. It helped look after ill workers infected with diseases due to overcrowding. Good work, Superintendent Villegas. The place now houses three museums.

The main church in town, its tower has a modern edge. Its 1747 extension was paid for by alms from the miners. I like the exterior colours. It is not a large church. Entrance is free. A sign of the times, there is hand gel at the entrance. It has been the parish church since 1812.
