"We visited Pancake Rocks at the recommendation of several locals, and it was truely worth their recommendations! Stunning scenery, and an amazing display of the power of the sea."
"We were told about the blow holes and pancake rocks by the tourist centre in Franz Josef. We expected a few signs to the rocks but that was all. However, driving up to them at Purakaiki we had no difficulty in recognising the stopping point. There were many tourist buses, campervans and a miriad ..."of cars parked all along the road and parking area. There is a big restaurant/cafe and souvenir shop taking advantage of all those people.
It is about a 15 minute walk from the road to the cliffs to see the pancake rock formations and to witness the massive blow holes (high tide is the best time to be there). The rock formations are interesting. The blow holes are mildly interesting to witness the ocean's force. The tracks are well laid out and a circular route will take about 40 minutes - allowing for photos.
