Good newsstands in Manhattan - near hotels

29 Nov 2011  I'm a newsprint junkie and NYC is probably America's best city for print news...still. Staying at some of NYC's hotels, sometimes the concierge or bellman know where the best nearest newsstand is... and sometimes they don't. Here's my personal list.

    A LOT of magazines crammed into a very small space. Seems like there is always someone re-stocking and weeding out old issues. The small shop does a heavy business. Includes newspapers, international and domestic: Spanish, Italian, French. 22 8th Ave., Greenwich Village. (212) 645-1197. Subway: L train (8th Ave.) 1,2,3 trains (14th St.) and A,C,E (14th St.).

    April 2014 UPDATE: Moved to the corner of Mulberry and Kenmare and is now called Mulberry Icon Magazines. Same management and same selection! Nearby hotels: Crosby Street Hotel at 39 Crosby St.; Mondrian Soho on Crosby St.
    Good, dependable 24 hour newsstand. Good magazine and foreign newspaper selection. Sample newspaper titles: International Herald-Tribune, Sunday (London) Times, FT, UK Guardian.

    Great international newsstand; carries all U.S. national dailies, Spanish, Italian, French and British magazines; French and Italian newspapers (LeMonde, Corre dela Serra); other European newspapers; Arabic newspapers. Great selection of art, fashion magazines and a pretty solid music collection (it's across from Lincoln Center so it should). Nearby hotels: Mandarin Oriental Columbus Circle, Empire Hotel, Trump Int'l., Essex House. Subway: Columbus Circle. When I was there it was staffed by a very helpful, friendly attendant.

  • 4. Hudson News - Grand Central Terminal - Lexington Passage

    Newsstand directly east of the great hall, in the Lexington Passage shopping concourse. This newsstand has just about everything that all of the other newsstands around town have, in one place: You can get all the U.S. national dailies (NYT, WSJ, FT); East coast newspapers (Wash. Post, Philly Inquirer, Boston Globe); European: LeMonde, Le Figaro, Corriere della Sera, other Italian newspapers, Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine and other German newspapers, local specialty papers like the Forward, at least one Hebrew newspaper; French art and fashion magazines, British magazines (no British newspapers that I saw); At least three papers in Arabic including Al Ashram (Egypt).

    Great bookstore which also happens to have one of midtown's better selections of international newspapers, especially Italian. Sample titles: 24 Ore (Italian); Il Messaggero (Italian); Corriere Della (Italian); Daily Express (UK); Le Monde Diplomatique (French); London Review of Books; New York Review of Books. Also specializes in art magazines, including a French section.
