Start your day at Lee anna state park, searching for the ruins of the Goodwin gold mine! Pan for gold and enjoy a moderate 7 mile hike through the forest.

Catch a quick lunch in Triangle, to take along with you to Leesylvania state park, where you can explore the ruins and easy hiking trail of Henry Lee (Robert E Lees father) and the cannon emplacements that actually shot in the civil war!! Great views of the water here and plenty of picnic areas.
The last leg of the journey is right over the waterline in Maryland (take route 1 then across the bridge to Indian Head) where you'll find one of the Civil war fort's (Fort Foote) that held the defense of Washington! Plenty of cannons, bunkers and building with a very easy hike filled with more history than hike as you relax and enjoy the end of the day. Watch the sunset from the park on the Potomac river view.
