Points of Interest

1. Escure Ranch is an old sheep ranch

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, acquired Escure ranch in the late 1980's. It is about 20 square miles. There are no fees for hiking. Most of the users are horseback riders.

As you can see on the map, we hiked to the falls on the trail, then followed a recommendation of some horseback riders and took an arroyo ... More

2. Old farmstead

You can go and explore the old farmstead. Buildings are all metal, that rodents can't compromise. Personally, I would only go up there in the winter, likely to be a magnet for rattle snakes.

3. Scenic river view

This is a scenic landscape, nice mesas and open sky. Easy old road to go mountain biking on also.

4. Cliffs

This are is very interesting, nice rock color in the cliffs. Does not feel like the type of rock desert this area is.

5. First view of the waterfalls

You crest the hill and see the first view of the waterfalls - at first you start wondering how they are possible, looks like two falls flowing in together.

6. Waterfalls

As you get closer, you realize there are actually three falls. - I only have pictures of two, we split up to explore the area.

At the falls is a great place to stop for lunch - seems like that's what everyone was doing.

7. Alternate hike

We were told that in dry season, you can easily hike back by following the river. Although, in rainy season, the water would be chest high at the crossings.

8. Arroyo - Barn Swallows

In following the arroyo, we came across what I call Barn Swallows - but this is their natural habitat. Dwellings dug into the mud. Too steep for predators to access. There where hundreds of birds flying around.

9. Accessing Escure Ranch

The roads to Escure Ranch are gravel, but in great condition. No 4x4 needed. Your vehicle will get dusty.

Easiest is to enter the destination coordinates into a GPS. It was 5+ miles of gravel road after we left the paved road. Most GPS units or Apps on smart phones will take direct entry of coordinates, for Escure ranch, enter:
