I haven't felt moved to write a review here before (positive to negative) but I wanted to share a few words of warning for other travellers: this was probably my worst experience in Japan! The place was freezing (unlike others we stayed), the owner grumpy and unhelpful, and the rooms were sparse. It's fine for the price, just don't expect... More

Like many of the other reviewers, I can say that this place is cheap!, but I would have probably been more comfortable at a capsule hotel than here in the middle of winter. The room was minimal as expected (no TV expect in the small common room; just a room with a nice futon, blanket and small pillow), but the... More

As an introduction to living in a Ryokan in a busy city - at a super price, this really can't be beaten. The manager is really friendly, the rooms clean and tidy and is being renovated in many areas that were previously wearing out. Don't expect The Ritz, but the atmosphere in the house is superb. These kind of places... More

All-in-all we got what we paid for at Taito Ryokan. It's not fancy, quite run-down and you can hear *everything* going on in the other rooms. That being said, we were looking to spend a lot of time in Tokyo out-and-bout and weren't looking for luxury or a great place to relax. Our bags were safe -- we had no... More

I was so looking forward to this place, it looked so charming and atmospheric from their website. But it's a fairly typical attitude to old buildings in Japan, they never clean or maintain anything, they are squeezing the last yen out of it before they demolish it. The manager spoke English but sat in his office and never came out... More

Taito came highly recommended to us by a friend who had stayed there previously, so despite the ringing in my ears of "gets what you pay for" we booked in for our first 4 nights in Japan. We arrived early and were told to wait in a room just opposite the office that doubles as reception. The furniture there was... More

Stayed here on 24-25 July for the Sumida River Fireworks, biggest fireworks in Japan, before moving on to Shinjuku. Location: Fantastic!!! 10-15min walk to either Asakusa or Ueno Sations. The small lane the ryokan is on is lined with other hotels and restuarants. Turn to the left at main street and a wide range of great affordable food (look at... More

If you like comfort, a neat place and clean bed: don't go to Taito Ryokan. But if you don't expect to much comfort and don't mind run down places but do like typical and a bit old fahioned places, you'll have a great time at Taito. It's well located, with friendly and helpful english speaking staff. More

While at Taito over the course of 5 days, I stayed in 3 different rooms, so I know that each room is different. In general, they are all very small rooms. Some have tatami mats, while others are hardwood. We thought the bed (one mat) was uncomfortable with the tatami mat and it was worse with the hardwood floor. We... More
