We booked the San Roman as our last stop of a week's holiday in Northen Spain, partly because of positive reviews mentioning a Michelin star and Relais & Chateaux status. We should have checked more carefully. Unfortunately it no longer has a Michelin recommendation and although the hotel's website claims that it is in the R & C group, this... More

We stayed in this excellent four star hotel for two nights prior to taking the ferry from Santander to Plymouth. The accomodation was in a large deluxe suite with a lovely balcony overlooking the garden and fields. The room was spacious, clean and furnished with interesting pictures and furniture. The staff were very friendly and efficient helping us with interesting... More

We stayed at this Hotel for 4 nights. On the positive side we had a very large room with a large terrace facing the garden, all very nice. It was clean and well planned. The building is made in such a way that all the time you have creeks and noise from the walls. We told the reception about this... More

We spend few nights in San Roman and definitely felt that we'll be coming back - relaxing atmosphere, staff was friendly and helpful, food was excellent and our child was well catered for by chef who prepared his chicken even it wasn't on the menu. We enjoyed the enormous art collection which was on display everywhere around the hotel and... More

We arrived to such a warm welcome frs (and owners)Cristina,Reuban and Patrick, who all speak brilliant English, which is very helpful in this area, where very little English is spoken. The hotel is decorated throughout with very interesting art and antiques, our very spacious bedroom was no exception, with lovely soft furnishings as well.We had doors opening onto a balcony, with wonderful views across the garden,fields... We decided to spend a week in the North of Spain between Bilbao and Santander Since we wanted to visit both countries and, of course, the Guggenheim museum. Finally, we decided a Relais & Chateaux: San Roman de Escalante. Beautiful hotel, impressing paintings, sculptures and furnitures..., fantastic setting, big and confortable rooms, very polite and attentive staff. Excellent English and... More

The San Roman de Escalante, could best be described as different! Set in its own grounds near the Spanish coast, the hotel boasts an enormous collection of artistic pieces. The grounds are beautiful and around every corner you spot a different sculpture. However, this did not extend to the pool area - which was drab and uninviting. Rooms at the... More

This hotel is in the countryside about 30 minutes drive from Santander. A great ambience of calm, seclusion and luxury envelops you as soon as you drive through the gates. We were shown to our two rooms, which were beautifully decorated and very large. In retrospect, I can't believe they were standard rooms, but that was the rate we were... More

This is a unique small hotel in a rural setting in Northern Spain. It is tranquil with excellent inconspicuous service. Our standard room was magnificent, huge, with very comfortable four poster canopied bed, and large marble bathroom. Best of all though was the Relais et Chateaux restaurant which was exceptionally good. Many lovely ocean beaches close by, and day trips... More
