While the rooms at the Volcano House are simple, located right on Crater Rim Drive, the great location cannot be argued with. Views into the Kilauea Crater and of Mauna Loa are simply amazing. My main memory of the Ka Ohelo Dining Room was the prime rib, which was amazing, and the sunset over Mauna Loa. The grounds make for... More

Stayed at KMC Oct 20th and walked by the Volcano House. There were workmen inside doing drywall work. All the furniture has been removed as was the carpeting. I spoke briefly with them workmen who said they still have not found a contractor to run the place but were hopeful that one would be found once the renovation was done,... More

We went by there on Dec 23, 2010, and it is nowhere near being completed. It is undergoing a major overhaul and it looked like nothing was near completion. There are no real hotels in Volcano so plan for a B&B or a rooming house. More

I'm from hong kong and I just came to hawaii for vacation with my family in for a week. I first stayed in Honolulu (main island) for 3 days in Makaha golf resort. My stay there was very pleasant. Yet my stay in the volcano house, big island after the stop in Honolulu was nothing near pleasant. The hotel (volcano... More

By the time you read this review, the Volcano House will have been closed for remodeling for approximately 9-12 months through most of 2010. This is a long overdue remodel. On the one hand, the Volcano House has a kind of cool retro-lodge feel....on the other hand, it's pretty run down. But, even run down, the location on the edge... More

We stayed in Volcano House at the most expensive rooms, and still it was relatively cheap. There was a view of the Kilauea Crater blocked by scrubby trees. This was a great rustic room with 50s-style furniture by looks, but soft comfy beds, hot water and a great location. The restaurant is $$$ for breakfast and lunch, and more average... More

We've stayed at other National Parks hotels (Yosemite, Zion, Bryce) and they were rustic but clean and quite comfortable. However, the Volcano House was the absolute pits. We stayed in the old section of the hotel, the original building. The first impression was - this place stinks like an old rotting house. Musty, mildewy, the room was minature, only 10'... More

if you want to stay in the volcano park, then there is no choice. This hotel is ok, but they seem to know that you have to stay with them if at all. More

Two nights there was enough for us to witness the breath-taking view of an active volcano, see all the local fauna and flora, lava tubes, lava flows, history of Volcano house hotel, and capture all the sights, tours and facts available in the National Park and nearby Observatory and Museum...lots to learn and see...breath-taking... For adventurers, sight-seers, scientists and nature... More
