This hotel is low priced and offers a quite comfortable stay. We looked at other hotels costing one third more and felt what we got at the Rioja was just as good as the higher priced hotels. We took a room on the top floor which meant that we had to walk on one flight of stairs. But it was... More

This Hotel is a real mexican style low-budget at is best. Located perfect i calle cinco de mayo and very close to the Zocalo and Plaza Alameda. Many good places to eat close the hotel - even a 24 hour dinner place opposite the hotel. The room is basic and simpel - but clean quiet and for the price of... More

I stayed at this hotel for a few days during Christmas week 2011. It was recommended by some friends who always stay there. You can't beat the price and the location. It's close to the zocalo, transportation, and many restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that our room didn't have a balcony or a... More

It is a great inexpensive Hotel! It is located just a block and a half from the Zocalo! The people are friendly and it is safe! I have been staying there every time I am in Mexico City for the past 20 years. Across the street is a Restaurant (Cafe Popular) that never closes.

If you travel in Mexico on a budget as I do, the Rioja, only a couple of blocks off the northwestern corner of the Zocalo on historic Cinco de Mayo, is a paradise. That's because, other than a relatively few stopover points at various places (one thinks, e.g. of the Hotel Del Parque in Matehuala), it is hard to find... More

My wife and I always stay in this little gem whenever we are in Mexico city. It is very central, clean, quiet, a great price and well run but be warned, you cannot book in advance. The only way to get in is to be there before 1300 as people are leaving - so far we have missed out only... More

I have stayed at the Rioja many times and have loved it. It is very close to the Zocalo, Garibaldi, the subway and it is safe and clean. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are very clean. The staff is very pleasant and go out of their way to help you once they get to know you they warm... More

This straight-forward, "traditional" -[probably into its 2nd century,] ideally located central hotel had a February 2012 room rate of 320pesos for a small French-balconied double with a glimpse of the Metropolitan Cathedral two blocks away. [singles and interior, ie., no view, even less expensive] The rooms we looked in on, [two in addition to the one we stayed in] are... More

I would stay no where else in Mexico City. I've stayed at the Rioja many, many times. Staff is very friendly. They always remember me. Perfect location, very near the Zocalo. The price is unbelievable. Rooms clean, bathrooms sparkle. If you need a taxi for the airport, the front desk can arrange it for you. If you don't speak Spanish,... More

I have stayed at the Rioja since 1993 and have LOVED it ever since. You must be a discerning customer, not frivolous, just open to a clean, inexpensive, safe room, close to the Zocolo, in the Centro Historico, and based in the prefect location to check out what Mexico City has to offer. If you are prissy, indulgent, or privileged...this... More
