I settled here for 3 nights. The location is superb in regards to the nightlife, clubs, restaurants, shops, and people watching. Best location hands down. However, the average rating is largely due to the room. The room was fine for 4 people. The AC worked well. The restroom was mediocre. There was one night after returning from Blue Parrot club (less than 2 minute walk), there were no running water. I slept feeling sticky. The pool left much to be desired. It didn't seem clean. They provided breakfast, but it didn't look appetizing. The wi-fi was spotty at best. I'd stay here again if it was really cheap between 40-50 USD. My favorite restaurant was across the hotel. It served fresh fruits, and its all organic!

We booked for 3 nights, the room had like a hundred mosquitoes inside, there are no windows. Bathroom stinks, towels stink, room feels like a cell, the pool its very small and it had bird poop all around, too much noise and bad signal with the wify. It was a nightmare. But great staff.

But, if you go there, make sure you have ear plugs and something to breathe the fresh air from. Noise is just unbearable and smell is horrible. Location is central, that is good. I am not a spoiled tourist but this place is just a big no, no. It is somehow dirty and sticky. People are kind though. Massage is not worth trying. Anyways, avoid it.

The staff member upon check in was the only good thing at this hotel. Being on fifth ave, you'd expect a little noise but it was as if a DJ was playing in my bedroom. The sheets had stains all over them and the pillow smelt really bad. The blinds were a tiny bit of fabric which wasn't even enough to cover the window. The towel left on my bed was dirty. The bathroom was dirty. The pool was dirty (and tiny). The breakfast was bread - not even toast because you had to cook it up yourself. I highly suggest avoiding this place.

We were in playa del Carmen for our wedding in May 2015. We decided to stay close to town after the wedding, somewhere cheaper than the resort. I found Hotel Azul on Hotels.com and based upon the free Wi-Fi, the price, and the pictures, I booked a room. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was right off of the busy 5th Avenue downtown, so we were right in the mix of things. The room was fine as it had a bed, shower, AC, and toilet. We are not super picky when it comes to the room as we don't spend a lot of time in it on vacation. The front desk staff were very helpful, especially Prax. Prax was very nice, spoke English, and was fun to talk to. There was another gentleman during the day who was also very nice and helpful. He didn't speak English, so he would pull up a website that translated so we could converse (as I speak only a little Spanish). From the room, the hotel's Wi-Fi was intermittent, but did get good reception at times. Our room had an issue with the toilet (our fault), and Prax immediately moved us to another room. In addition, they held our bags for a few days so we could go visit Tulum, and then came back to stay a few more nights. Great area for bars, food, shopping! One block from the beach! Only cons we had: rooms were a little bright due to lights right outside the window and light colored blinds; the noise from outside could be heard pretty loudly in the AM and late at night when people are coming back from the bar; the bed was pretty hard so we slept in the other one in the room.

This was my third visit of this beautiful seaside city and first time I decided to stay in a low budget hotel. Anyway, my experience was very positive, the rooms are very clean and the location is directly on the main avenue of the city. Special thanx goes to the front desk staff (Praxedes) for his excellent guest service and very useful tour recommendations. If you travel to Playa del Carmen on a low budget - this is the right place.

I booked a stay at this hotel for 2 nights prior to checking into a 5 night stay at an all inclusive resort. Upon checking in after a long flight we got into the room and it was the most musty smelling place i have ever encountered. No air conditioning and it was hot and WET in the room. One thin sheet on the bed and it felt damp and had blood stains on it. GROSS! I dont think I was able to get even 2 hours of sleep all night because of the heat, terribly uncomfortable bed, people walking by the room being extremely loud until the bars closed down about 4am and then by 6am could hear people again in the lobby as breakfast was being served just outside the door. It was one of the worst nights of my life and I would compare it to what a mexican jail would feel like. We opted to check in early to the all inclusive hotel rather than suffer another night of zero sleep or air conditioning. Playa del carmen is so hot and humid the fact that they dont have A/C units in thier rooms is unbelievable. You couldn't PAY ME to stay here again!

We were 4 ppl traveling for vacation this place looked fine on their site but our room was a box! No where for clothes terrible included breakfast. Service was so bad they seemed annoyed that we were there. We never got new towels unless we complained we caught them using the same bed sheets. The only ppl around the pool were huge ants that bite!! We all had bites not to mention a cockroach in the room. :( over bad place to be on vacation and not worth the money it was more disgusting than the hostels. Please don't stay here!!

As a woman travelling alone I wanted a small quiet inexpensive hotel near to Fifth Avenue. From the minute I arrived the problems began Looks more like pension for young kids. I did not feel secure as all rooms o first floor and rooms are bear and prison l Iike. I had made mistake of paying 3 nights in advance. They transferred me to a sister hotel Maya Cento, what a dump, door did not lock, tv did not work, etc.. I only made it through first night as noisy and did not sleep. Checked out and they would not give me my money back. Horrible management. I have stayed at many inexpensive hotels. These people are liars and crooks.

I believe the owner has other hotels in the area so don't confuse the other reviews with this hotel which is on fifth avenue beside the tequila barrel bar. Firstly we took 2 rooms at this hotel because we were left stranded on our arrival in Playa del Carmen. We had booked and paid in full for a condo only to find out on our arrival that she had double booked us and we had no where to stay! Talk about stressful. My daughter arrived before us and found the Maya Azul hotel on-line. Most places, due to the Christmas season, were already booked. Upon arrival at Maya Azul hotel everything seemed ok, the reception area and courtyard were Ok , not fancy but clean enough. I want to mention also that the staff were all (from the front desk hto the cleaning people) very polite, nice and helpful. The problems with the hotel were not a result of their work ethics. The hotel needs to be upgraded , the rooms smelled very musty. Our room was Ok once we ran the air conditioning #10, but the room our children were in never got rid of the foul smell, #4. The bedding and towels while clean are all old and stained and the pillows aren't even like regular pillows, they're small and lumpy. A few mornings we didn't have water and we never had warm water in our bathroom sink. The all night noise from the nearby bars was also very annoying. If the owner upgraded and bought new bedding and towels that would make a huge difference . That alone would have upgraded my review greatly.
