The dorm had bed bugs! I got bitten on the first night, but they didn't get particularly inflamed until the next day. When i told the receptionist, they persuaded me it was sandfly bites from the beach. Unfortunately I accepted this (still tired after a long flight) after the receptionist examined the bed and couldnt find anything. The next night... More

Stayed at Popul Vuh twice on our trip to Mexico...everyone that works there is very friendly and super helpful with local info. The resturant is very good with very afordable pricing. Breakfast is included in the price of the room (eggs, coffee, toast, cereal) a quiet oasis in the craziness that is Playa Del Carmen.

I hated Playa del Carmen: it looked like a shopping mall by the beach. But Popol Vuh was like a small oasis of peace, with direct beach access. It's basically a campground inside the city, with small bungalows facing picnic tables and 3 hammocks. Watch out for falling coconuts. The two guys running this place were very friendly and helpful.... More

There are some good points about Popol Vuh: It is cheap ($25 for a private room), near the beach, has friendly staff and free breakfast across the road. The beds are comfortable. Apart from that the place lacks vibe, the kitchen is filthy - didn't even want to boil water for a cup of tea. The bathroom always has pools... More

First off.. dont expect too much... this place is classic beach bungalow stuff.. but I absolutely adored it!! Rooms are basic but the communal bathroom is spotless clean and the property courtyard is a dream.. sand, hammocks, palm trees.. Gama the manager is great not only for information and assistance, but a good bloke to relax in the grounds and... More

My partner and I stayed at Popol and if it wasn't for the friendly staff we would not have even stayed one night! We arrived to what seemed to be a run down accommodation but thought it was ok as it was right on the beach and a reasonable price. We came back to our room to find mice poo... More

Maybe this place has fallen into disrepair in the past couple of years because I'm extremely surprised to see any high ratings. A friend and I stayed in one of the double rooms for 2 nights and we had to get out. For the price we felt as if we were camping, the place was sooo damp and smelly. The... More

OK...this place has very nice people working there, but the place itself is horrible. it looks like a slum and smells bad too. it is right on the beach, but that does not make it anymore appealing. the room has no windows and therefore has no ventilation. the bathroom, just bad, real bad. it needs a painting on the outside... I was a little skeptical after reading reviews, but after being there I knew this was the best location! If you are looking for luxury forget it, but a hammock in the shade a 100' from the beach this is for you!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Playa del Carmen used to be one little fishermen's village but in the last 15 years has become very popular and is now Mexico's number 1 destination. This place was established here in 1975, and we have been running this B&B since 2002. Our goal has always been to make you feel like home; if you are visiting Playa del Carmen because of its beach, believe us, we are your 1st option given the fact that our location is privileged, a few steps from the white sandy beach with our own private path, half block from the famous and glamorous "Quinta Avenida", and one Block from the main Bus station.Give us the opportunity to serve you, our cabañas are rustic, nothing fancy nor luxurious, but definitely cozy and with a great environment and atmosphere. We set the mood, you make the party.Mostly every weekend (Friday or Saturday) we organized a bbq so everyone can meet other guests. (It might get noisy, but will be worth it)We are looking forward to have you here. ... more   less
