This hotel is not for clean freaks. It is for people who like character. The many different theme rooms are worth it alone, but I generally found the service and price to be very good. Where else can you stay in downtown Vancouver for under $100 a night? The rooms were quiet and the hotel was mostly empty so I... More

i understand that this hotel is not for everyone....they even say so on dominion website. but if you want an inexpensive place to stay and somewhere different from holiday inn...this might be the place for you. Great concept.....have local artist decorate each of the room so noo two are alike. I stayed two nights and actually switched rooms to have... More

I was in Vancouver for just 2 days, and having checked out of my first night hotel (another story!) chose the Dominion while vwalking around Gastown - it looked quite attractive, and the lobby seemed fine. The room was really quite grotty. I was booked on an early morning Greyhound to Banff next day, so went to bed at about... More

OK, I never write these things, but this place was such a dump I feel the need to steer folks clear of it. First of all, my girlfriend and I are seasoned travelers who've backpacked thru Europe and done the litany of youth hostels and budget hotels. We are both architects, and are very open minded to non-conventional accomodations. So,... More

We are usually adventurous, art-loving and relatively undemanding guests, and were lured to the Dominion hotel by its rave review (notably in the Globe and Mail) and laudable social justice leaning. Only to be greatly disappointed: loud floor shaking music until 3am (complimentary ear plugs don't quite do it), leaky bathrooms, cockroach traps in rooms, art installations that don't quite... More

The Dominion is not a hotel for the boring.. we stayed in the hearts room, which is painted a deep red, with christmas lights strung over the bed, and 3-d glasses are provided. when you put the glasses on.. it looks like hearts are falling on your head. It was VERY clean, which is my only real requirement with a... More

It's at the edge of a drug-ridden, blighted area. Nobody who knows Gastown advises walking anywhere east of Abbott St. - day or night. The hotel's stairway and hallway carpeting is stained and worn. There's no elevator. The room had ancient debris in the corners and around the radiator pipe (linens were clean) Hard to tell what had been "remodeled",... More

We had made reservations at the DomionHotel during our Canada Trip inMay 2005. On arrival the outside of the hotel looked nice however the inside was very disappointing. We walked into a very drab reception area which was in dire need of redecoration and cleaning. This applied to the other areas of the hotel in particular the stairways which pass... More

For rooms that are $49 - $79 a night at the height of summer, the Dominion Hotel is a steal. As you said, your room was clean, the building was nice, and you in fact just missed the repainting of our lobby and common areas. However, the Dominion is simply not for everyone. We give everyone who checks in a... More

My mother and I visited Vancouver for the first time July 21st - 23rd. We had reservations at the Dominion Hotel in Downtown Vancouver based on the reviews from this and other sites. But we never made it to the hotel. First, we called the hotel for direction from the ferry. The front desk staff could not give us clear... More

It is a pity you did not walk the two blocks from where you parked to see the Dominion Hotel's location and its unique art hotel rooms. While it is unfortunate that that the front desk was not able to give you proper directions on parking, I can commiserate with whoever took your call as I myself had to park... More

My experience at the Dominion Hotel was not good. I would not call the Dominion Hotel chic—it's actually run down with questionable security. The art wasn't that great either. I had a room by an up and coming painter but all the room consisted of was thift store furnishings (and not the cool kind) and a large format photo of... More
