Early each evening the owner, journalist Heidi Holland, invites all her guests for a glass (or two) of wine--and this B&B attracts intriguing guests. We had great discussions with a couple of German bankers, a doctor doing research on TB & AIDS in South Africa, a young Canadian about to start working in a community project. Some rooms are a... At the end of June I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to SA to support a volunteer mentoring program in the area. (Infinitefamily.org) One of the other members of the program recommended The Melville House as a suitable place to stay during my two weeks in the area. I really enjoyed the feel of the place.... Another triumph for TripAdvisor. Heidi Holland is a great hostess and attracts interesting people to her late afternoon wine salon. The hotel itself is fine, located in a suburb (we were told that all the hotels had left Johannesburg itself), good security in a city which we found a little scary (and we live in New York). The price is... More

I recently enjoyed a week long stay and another short stay a few days later at The Melville House, and could not be more pleased with my experience. I travel to South Africa for research, usually alone, and the chance for conversation and connection at Heidi's house really enhanced my stay this time around. The Melville House provides very good... More

A budget place full of warm and welcoming touches. My room was cozy and clean and I slept well, but most of all I enjoyed the delicious breakfast, social vibe and charm of Heidi Holland. Though it is a tad far from the airport, this B&B is steps from some hip restaurants, galleries and shops. If you require anonymity and... More

A safe and attractive place in Johannesburg. The best part was the salon-like discussions at the end of the day, glass of wine in hand. The host, a writer, welcomes a clientele of artists, academics, activists and social development workers and the exchanges are lively, instructive and entertaining. We had to move on, but would have liked to stay longer.... More

If you absolutely have to go to Johannesburg (and offhand I can't think of anything that would get me back there) this is the place to stay. I can really only repeat the good comments by other travellers. Clean, nicely appointed rooms, helpful staff, great breakfast and what seemed to be a safe location. I stayed there on my way... More

This is the rare spot where the other guests are as important to the experience as the accommodations. You meet some widely-traveled, highly-knowledgeable people--NGO staffers, scientists, journalists--and get some rare insights into life in modern South Africa. Highly recommended, especially as an alternative to the usual anonymous hotel.

Only got to spend two nights in this really lovely guest house -- wish I could have stayed longer. Comfortable, attractive space, delicious breakfast, and great company and conversation. Safe, eclectic, and entertaining neighborhood. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Johannesburg.

on creating such an inviting space. The Melville House feels like home, even though its way different from the house I grew up in. I wont choose any other place when I visit Johannesburg.
