Captain Jack himself was lovely, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable on all things nautical. however, the hostel is distinctly average, pretty dark dingy rooms, dorms only ($13 a night). They serve surprisingly good food - a french/vietnamese chef (the red curry was AMAZING!). food is on the pricier side but would recommend for dinner as there didn't seem to be... More

Thanks for taking the time to comment on Captain Jack's. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Just to note, we have newly installed lights on dimmer switches in all the dorms. Don't know if they were in place for your stay. Rooms now are as bright or dim as you like. We find the dimmers work well at night when people... More

The hostel can be quite cramped if it is full, which it may be when you visit (if you are looking/waiting for a boat like everyone else). The dorms are only cooled by fans, and these are insufficient should the dorms fill up. The beds are encased in bedbug-resistant covers, so you can rest here easy. Wifi is not free,... More

Thanks Christopher for taking the time to comment on Captain Jack's. Just wanted to let you know we heard you. WiFi and lockers [with a $5 deposit] are now free. Cheers, Capt Jack More

I had a absolutely amazing time staying in Portobelo... the lil town has a incredibly rich history and a somewhat unique, laidback lifestyle. Getting there is very easy from Panama City.... you take the bus from Albrook bus station to Colon, but you need to get off in Sabanitas(right next to "Rey Supermarket") . You will then need to wait... More

We stayed in Portobello hostel trying to see if we could get a boat to Columbia. We ended up not getting a boat because we did not have much time, but we stayed in Portobelo for two nights and explored the town. Captain Jack is quite a character and a great host and it was fun for us to stay... More

Small place with clean beds. Its great place for night or two to find a boat to Colombia. Jack is great and full of information, but very busy too. Internet is not free but you can use one of theres for 30min for a $1, plenty of time to let your friends or family know you found your boat.

Simply the best food in town (although far from the cheapest), a great place to meet other backpackers who are either about to set sail or just have. Clean and hospitable owners in a good, quiet location. Internet is not free (weird, but is probably expensive in Portobelo). Make sure you head over to the three level fort and check... More

My girlfriend and I came to Portobelo not knowing where to stay and stumbled across Captain Jack's new Hostel Portobelo. Very friendly atmosphere with clean, comfortable bed. Dennis and Jack did an amazing job building this place from scratch and they will make sure your stay is a blast. There is a painted backpacker sign where the bus drop people... More

My brother and I arrived by bike to Portobelo after asking around in Colon for a boat to Colombia. Everyone in Colon directed us to Portobelo and it was there we found the lovely hostel on the hill.
