Thanks to Google Earth I scoured Derbyshire to find this pub and the memories have returned. Last visited here in 1973 and can vaguely remember having to tap on my drinking glass for some more ale. One tap for bitter two taps for mild ? Very basic pub from a time warp. No crappy music etc.

As everyone says - a proper pub. It's like stepping back in time. No fripperies, just tables, seats a hatch in the wall and barrels of beer and cider. There are other drinks available but the beer's obviously the thing.

I have been to the pub once or twice over the last 30 years. It Never changes & that is what makes it so wonderful. The beer is poured direct from the barrels as it should be fun and there is an excellent choice of real ales available. The current landlady has been there since 1976 and serves you. This... More

My wife an I have just stayed there for Three nights,Proper gem of a pub. Mr & Mrs Short have got it just right ,very friendly people with beer served just as it should be straight from the barrel. We had good conversation with the locals and no children ,Tv or games machines ,a perfect drinking pub. The breakfast was... More

We stopped off at the Barley Mow before starting a walk. Once we stepped into this charming little pub we could have stayed there all afternoon. It is a hidden gem, lost in time. It is small, cosey, simple and atmospheric in a quirky sort of way. It attracts a friendly, interesting crowd. Let's hope it never changes.

I dropped into this pub having walked around Carsington Water on a hot Saturday early afternoon. There are few pubs like this in the whole of England. It is a perfect, small, beer drinkers' pub, not a family entertainment centre. There is nothing for children to do there - so don't take them and spoil everyones' day. Also unless you... More

This pub/inn has just leapt into my top three favourite pubs in the world, ever. I stayed for two nights with my family and enjoyed some of the freshest, tastiest traditional ale I have ever imbibed, quaffed in robust but earnest and conformable surrounds, full English cooked breakfasts straight from the AGA and basic but cosy rooms all for a... Truly and unbelievable unfriendly and inhospitable 'welcome' by the landlady. Went with my wife, in-laws and our 14 month old son for a quick drink. Just don't attempt to take a (smiley, quiet) child in there or the landlady will ensure regret it. The beer was good, the service surly and ungracious.

One for connoisseurs of the true English pub, with no concessions to the bland make overs that have blighted so many of our pubs. Superb, inexpensive, real ale straight from the barrel, good cheese & pickle rolls at lunchtime, and all this served by a friendly landlady in a pub with coal fires and no piped music or fruit machines.... I've been drinking in the Barley Mow on and off for the last fifteen years. The Landlady and Landlord have got it just as they see fit and I can't really fault the place. No music, plastic food or plastic beer, all the ale and cider is drawn straight from the cask. There is a range of good quality bottled... More
