As previous reviewers have said, the position of this hotel could not be better. Close to the town centre (so close to the shops you can off-load and start again !) yet in a lovely quiet area by the Cathedral. Reception staff are charming and interior of the hotel certainly exceeded our expectations. We upgraded to a room with air-con, the... More

We stayed at the Wessex for a weekend with friends and enjoyed our stay very much. We had dinner both nights and the food was very good considering we were with a large party and the catering was on a large scale. The drink prices though, particulary the wine, were eye-wateringly expensive!! The breakfast is also very good, buffet style,... More

We sadly stayed for one night only, next time we will stay for at least 3! The hotel shares the grounds with the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, we had a great view from our room that was very well furnished, nice and clean. We kept the curtains open at night and we could see the Cathedral bathing in a golden glow,... More

We stayed 2 nights and paid extra for parking and a cathedral view. The view is amazing, well worth it, although I'm sure in winter the view is better, as ours was slightly obscured by the lovely spring trees! :) We had issues booking at first due to their website issues but this was quickly solved and staff in the... We stayed for a night in the Mercure to attend a wedding in Winchester. The major strength of this hotel is the location, slap bang next to the cathedral. This means that if you are lucky you got fabulous views towards the cathedral. We weren't that lucky (street view), but the 'classic double' was by all standards a good hotel... More

We stayed two nights whilst touring south England. The staff were very helpful, the location was wonderful, the breakfast and the room with a view of the cathedral were lovely. The hotel looks a little tired, but for the money it was very clean, (rate doesn't include parking or wifi). Would recommend both the hotel and Winchester, a beautiful town... More

We had one night at this Mercure. The hotel is very central, next to the very nice cathedral gardens. Some rooms have view on the gardens and the cathedral... But others are just above the car park, and have views on the car park and/or the street (which was unfortunately our case...). Wifi unfortunately charged extra, which i found anormal... More

wow, well a very enjoyable nights stay for my birthday. Room's view was of Winchester cathedral . Room was up on a half landing, I was expecting it to be noisy, but it was so quiet even the chimes from the cathedral every 15 minutes didn't disturb my night. Service in the hotel from car parking attendant to room service... More

The hotel is overlooked by Winchester Cathedral so the outlook from bedrooms facing the Cathedral is amazing. The staff were always helpful and friendly. The Hotel is comfortable and our room was spacious. Winchester is small and very attractive. All places of interest are within walking distance. Good restaurants and pubs are in abundance. The Hotel has a small car... More
