Like others have stated this hotel does have great architecture and beautiful views but leaves a lot to be desired in other areas. We have just returned from our second Shearings break and for what we paid I suppose it wasn't bad. Please note.. If you are located in a room on the ground floor then you are lucky not... More

Booked early, hoping to get a good room, ended up on the top floor. Bathroom floor relaid like a mountain range, toilet cistern and lid cracked, shower support rail running with rust. Bare wires, wood in windows rotten. Hotel duty manager not interested. No frosted glass in bathroom window. Room was very basic, No fire and evacuation notices, but plenty... More

Very prominent Hotel in Whitby overlooking the bay and views to the Abbey. The architecture in the hotel is wonderful with fine plaster work and some stained glass windows, plenty of rooms to sit and take in the views, read, etc. Our room was at the rear of the hotel so the view was of the car park, but having... We stayed in this hotel for one night and was long enough. The room window was falling apart, bare wires in the bathroom, mould on the ceiling in the bathroom, the built in wardrobe was filthy inside and finger prints all over mirror. Cleaning staff shouting at eight in the morning. The breakfast was terrible and so was the waiting... More

We stay at The Royal when ever we go to Whitby and really wouldn't stay anywhere else. This year we stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms and it was great (although the bathroom was still as before). The staff are always very friendly and helpful. On our 2 night stay we always spend 1 night in the hotel... More

My wife and I have just returned from a 3 night break at this hotel, We say beware the four poster bed as it is built into a wooden surround which you have to climb over to get in and out of bed, and not being as young as we used to be found this virtually impossible. The hotel has... More

The hotel is dated and apparently the lounge / bar area is that same as 25 years ago. The food goes from poor to quite good ( seems to depend on how many clients are staying !! ) The bedrooms are a disgrace - ( room 239 single) The mattress was like sleeping on a bag of potatoes slightly relieved...
