Certainly this was a unique lodging experience, but there were several drawbacks: --- poor lighting inside and lack of amenties --- no shower in our room, only a bath --- incredibly difficult to find, even with GPS and coordinates --- service was transactional during our stay --- a bit of a hike over the hill to the old town restaurants... This was the best part of our honeymoon! We stayed for two nights in a real cave! It was warm and comfortable, the bed was large and so comfortable. We had two lovely relaxing nights sleep in our cave. There was an extra large bath which was really relaxing and is an experience not to be missed in itself! The... More

We spent two nights here at Easter 2012. The experience was one not to have missed. The setting, the distinctiveness of the place, and the sheer delight of being in a place so redolent of history made this truly unforgettable. The "room" [i.e cave] we were allocated was warm and comfortable, the breakfast very good and the staff extremely helpful. We could not... None of the usual amenities like phone and TV and shower, and not a place for anyone who has difficulty walking. YOU GET TO SLEEP IN A CAVE. A warm cave, with radiant heat so the floor is lovely to walk on in bare feet. It's like a film set, with a long table with a white jug of water... More

Absolutely mind-blowing place, beautiful location overlooking the gorge, really comfortable bed, very peaceful quiet room, great night's sleep, breakfast in the rock church is so amazing it seemed a shame to eat it, we spent a long time taking photos of it! but then stuffed ourselves silly and still couldn't manage it all, what a feast, what a location... very... Matera is a wonderful place but I would not recommend this hotel. The rooms are extremely basic there is no phone, no wardrobe, no where comfy to sit, no desk, no room service, no mini bar, no parking, no toiletries, no bath robes or slippers, (which with stone floors would have been nice) only two towels and the lighting although... After visiting the Sextantio in S. Stefano, we knew we wanted to visit this establishment. It is gorgeous. We stayed in Cave 18. The directions to the reception were perfect. Parking is about 200 m away. They accepted dogs and it was lovely. The room itself was great. Warm, comfy beds, a rain shower, a bowl of fruit, and candles... More

This hotel is undoubtedly the best I've ever visited (and I've visited many great ones!), it combines beautiful sensitive design with a truly unique environment. Living in the original sassi cave dwellings lets you grasp the concept of the place and enables you to have a wonderful romantic and private trip away in a gorgeous town. The hotel combines detox... We loved our room. It was very cleverly done. Beautifully restored to be in keeping with the original contadino dwellings, and yet kitted out with very high quality bathroom fittings. Beautiful old, heavy linen used for sheets and table cloths at breakfast. A "cave" setting and yet warm to go into, snug and very comfortable. Huge church candles added wonderfully... More

We loved this place! Not only is it romantic and dramatic, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Too bad they didn't have a restaurant otherwise we would have never left. The views are stunning, and staff very accommodating. More
