Wasnt able to sleep a wink due to the shouting and swearing in the high street at pub and club closing time. Would definitely recommend booking a room at the back if you absolutely have to stay here

Stayed for one night stay at the end of March as a single traveller on business in the area. Despite hearing good things about the hotel unfortunately I can only say everything was "average" and very uninspiring which is a real shame for such a splendid setting. My room was very small and very dated. It was a very warm... More

Thank you for your comments reference your recent visit to the hotel. I am sorry to learn of your disappointment and that the hotel was not to your expectations. I very much regret you had such an “average” experience with us and I have discussed the matters you raised with my team. As with all guest feedback, after investigation we... More

I have stayed here a few times and I'm a very picky person . Rooms are dated but that's the character. Clean and just the right size. The receptionist is very rude and grumpy but you can overlook that as the other staff make up for it! I love it personally!

I have just returned from a stay at the George hotel and what a wonderful experience it was. The hotel is old and full of creaking floorboards and uneven walls, there is even an original wattle and daub wall on one of the staircases which all adds to the ambience. The room (401) was freshly painted and clean with clean... More

We stayed for a week and had undisturbed nights in a clean room that was just big enough for the two of us. OK, so the bathroom was looking a bit tired - but everything worked (except towel rail) perfectly. The location was ideal for the town centre - and for walking to the Colchester Town Station. Parking was behind... More

I don't understand some of the reviews, the hotel is an old building you can't expect it to be modern inside. The miss matching furniture gives it character. Our room was lovely the bath could of done with updating but the shower was fantastic! The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely. The restaurant was charming. The noise level... More

been a visitor of the hotel for years, not to stay, but lunch, as it has always been the only decent place to eat in colchester, oh dear what has happened? had cream tea yesterday, dreadful, the waitress was very apologetic, and took away the offending scone, however the second one was a stale as the first, by then id... We have been visting this hotel for many years and stayed over a few times. We usualy go to the bar and eat. At one time the hotel and its visitors seemed to be quite sophisticated but it does seem to be a bit of a concourse nowdays for all and sundry. The fire is rarely lit in the lounge... More

We stayed here a few days ago and found although an old place there was plenty of character. Staff were friendly, although very busy. Room was dated and on the small side, although the bathroom looked nearly new but the actual bedroom could have done with a bit more tlc. Especially the linen, which was frayed - needs throwing away... More
