We’ve been returning to Taman Bebek for over 20 years … It had been 8 years since our last visit to the island, and maybe slightly longer for Taman Bebek as we never made it to Ubud the last time we were in Bali. Huge admirers of the work of renowned architect, Made Wijaya, we were saddened to read about his death in 2016 and slightly worried about the state of the hotel - since his death and post-Covid - on our return this time round. So we chose not to book in advance, but instead drove directly from Sanur to check the state of the villas, before deciding on whether to stay or not. It was a bit of a gamble, but one we were willing to risk. We’re heartened to find out that Made Wijaya entrusted the new owners to look after his beloved resort, and they appear to be keen to carry on his remarkable legacy. Coming here evokes a different, gentler time … before the Eat, Pray, Love/Bali Swing/Instagram-TikTok influencer madness that seems to have overtaken almost everything else in Ubud. Before coming to Taman Bebek, you must check your expectations - this is not a full-service resort with 24-hr butler service, room service or the latest tech. It’s always been sparsely-staffed and it’s not in a central location in Ubud, which is a 15 - 20-minute drive away. It can be very quiet and isolated, especially at night … so solo, female travellers should perhaps be advised to avoid staying here. Expect giant tokay geckos the size of half your forearm in the cupboards, frogs in the bathroom and other creepy crawlies about. It’s best if you have your own transport, although many rely on ride-hailing services to get around these days. We do however miss the free Indonesian breakfasts we used to get. Now, a fruit platter and coffee is complimentary, but guests have to pay extra for a limited breakfast selection - either cereals, oatmeal or omelette. There’s a vegetarian or vegan menu for other room service meals now. Service ends by 7.30pm … this was not available in the past. The resort is old and is somewhat tired-looking. Some of their older trees have died back and the landscaping needs constant tending because the jungle encroaches so quickly. Repairs are needed where old stonework has deteriorated, but the new owners are aware of this … it’s a work-in-progress, and I wish them every success that it continues.

Absolutely book this place. The villa is incredible! Thoughtfully designed with just the right amenities. Interesting history, funky art filled interior, and the best views in Bali! Down the street from some great restaurants and a short ride into central Ubud. Prita was extremely helpful in finding the best driver (thank you Komang!) and made wonderful suggestions on things to do. The staff were extremely helpful, and the property and pool were gorgeous. I can’t wait to come back! There is no where else in Ubud I would rather stay. Huge mahalo to Taman Bebek for a spectacular stay!

We stayed at this property (the Croissant Villa) at about the same time of the recent review that said never stay here. We had a wonderful experience. The location is to die for and the staff are just lovely. I agree, reception was sometimes closed, but this is a very different place to others in Ubud and you just have to be a little flexible - that’s why it really suited us. This isn’t the place for you if you expect 24 hour service. That being said, we arrived at 2.00am, our driver (Yokka- can’t recommend him highly enough. This fellow is honest as the day is long, and is a very safe driver. How he maintains that level of calm in Bali traffic is beyond belief - +62 813 3945 7229 is his number. He is based in Ubud, but will drive you & pick you up anywhere) lead us to our villa and the key was in the door. I just made sure that Rita knew we were arriving at an odd hour and all the arrangements were in place. I think they are going to renovate the property during 2020. Rita, please try and retain the character that makes this place unique.

WORST EXPERIENCE!!!! TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL!!! The host did not reply to our messages starting with 2 days prior to arrival. Upon arriving to the property, check-in was closed with no contact number to reach a manager. We had to wait a guest to pass by so to give the number of the a girl named Rita, supposedly the manager, to contact her. So we did, yet she refused to come meeting us claiming that we have no confirmed reservation. Only after we pursuaded her to meet us, she came to the check-in where we provided the evidence of booking Mallay Villa, confirmation and payment with 3 months in advance. Her reaction? Not even an apology but a cynical "Guys we are fully booked. Start looking another hotel door to door"!!! Then she left letting us hanged there without even offering a bottle of water or bathroom ..... Having lost already 2 hours there, being way past midnight we were forced to stay in a corner outside the premises near the street looking for a room on a Christmas night which was a mission impossible yet around 05:00 we manged to find... Make yourself a favor and don't book this property!

My partner and I stayed at this hotel at one of our many stop off hotels around Bali. We stayed in a beautiful villa once stayed in by David Bowie! The room is well air conditioned, the outdoor bathroom is lovely (really makes you feel at one with nature), the kitchen is really big and fresh water provided every day. The view from the pool is breathtaking and the area is great. One of our favourite restaurants to eat in was Sayan House which is a Japanese Mexican place - absolutely delicious and only a five minute walk from hotel. We have to say a great thank you to Ria who went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. She was always available via WhatsApp and even organised our three way boat transfers for us when we left. All in all an amazing stay in an incredible place - I would highly recommend.

We spent three lovely nights here after staying more centrally in Ubud earlier in the trip. So nice to be out of the hustle and bustle and enjoy the calm of Villa Made at Taman Bebek. The views From this villa especially are stunning and it’s so relaxing by the pool which looks out over the river and the rice terraces. Whilst here the staff were happy to help us plan lots of local trips - a hike up Mount Batur arriving at the peak in time for sunrise, a trip to Tegalalang waterfall and the nearby bars, and white water rafting with Bali Biltang company. It was fine for us but just a heads up that the villas are very much in a jungle setting so there’s a lot of wildlife and frogs / lizards which come in your room and bathroom (which is quite exposed to the elements). We didn’t mind at all but it can be noisy and a bit disconcerting if you aren’t expecting it! Finally, a lovely breakfast was brought to your terrace each morning so you didn’t need to travel anywhere. And if you want a beer / juice during the day or a local dinner, there’s Sayan Cafe on site which has a great selection of food and drinks.

Great staff, super friendly and helpful. The place is cute and on the hills with indescribable views. The rooms/villa had everything. Comfy beds and beautiful surroundings. Only downside was the temperature of the pool and it not being lit at night! Good job nevertheless

We are a couple and traveled in Bali for a few weeks and stayed 4 nights in Taman Bebek in Ubud at the West Villa in April 2019. We really liked the stunning views and the quietness of the location: just by the river and the jungle offering a perfect combination, waking up and having breakfast with the sounds of nature surrounding you always feels nice. The swimming pool provides beautiful views over rice fields and the mountains in the distance. The room was clean and comfortable, very nicely decorated, however it seems that some things are starting to wear down, hopefully this will be restored soon as only little is needed to refresh Taman Bebek and bring it back to its former beauty. The staff is very warm and a special thanks to Eiira who is extremely helpful and will do whatever she can to make a good stay even better.

Taman Bebek in Ubud, Bali was built by the late Made Wijaya, a landscape architect famous for his amazing gardens. Taman Bebek was a real gem, beautiful villas with stunning views. It has since been taken over by Rita..thank you for saving it. However, the villas are not "restored" as advertised on the website. The pictures are old. The villas have a fresh coat of paint but many things are run down. The shutters on the beautiful wooden doors are not working, my villa's famous ceiling fan is gone. The garden inside the bathrooms have weeds creeping in. The spectacular gardens on the grounds are unwieldy. The lovely cafe is gone. I have been coming to Taman Bebek since 1999. Sad to see it this way. Having said that, I will still return. The villas and swimming pool are clean, the gorgeous views are still there, the wifi works. I hope the run down bits are just temporary and Rita is in the process of restoring this place to its former glory. Manager Eira and her staff Arka were amazing, hard-working, efficient, extremely helpful. Loved them.

As an artist, my stay in Taman Bebek was a much needed one. To stop, recharge, dream. The resort itself is beautiful with all the lush opulent vegetation that surrounds. With the quick development that’s happening in Bali, it was a refreshing change to stay in a place where the old Bali charm and rich cultural heritage still retains. From the gardens to the artefacts on the walls - each had their own history to tell. I stayed 2 nights at the Honeymoon suite. It adorned vintage Indonesian influences from the bed, doors and table and a very lush comfy bed that I couldn't wait to get myself tucked in every night. The staff were lovely and attentive and it felt homey. Special mention to the manager Eira who was extremely helpful and accommodating to all my little needs. Thank you Taman Bebek, I will be back!
