We stayed here for one night on our long drive from Golden Bay to Greymouth. It was wild, wet weather. The lodge is cosy and very clean. The hosts Grey and Nancy have built with great attention to sustainability. Importantly you feel like guests rather than a source of income. When I left my reading glasses in the room they... More

There was heavy rain when I reached to this Lodge in the middle of native bush. When I entered, I found a cosy place in a very tranquil and peaceful environment. This Eco-Lodge has been built by the owners themselves and you can feel that everything has been made with love and attention to detail. Nancy and Grae are very... More

We had the Mountain View Hut reserved for two nights. This is a large, attractive room, simple yet extremely comfortable. The facilities are located a minute's walk away- either a bathroom with a running water "night toilet" and shower in the lodge, or the very modern and clean composting toilets close by. We selected this private cabin before we knew how... More

Wonderful stay in the mountain lodge. They really should charge more, this place is amazing. They have just built a garden lodge too, which also looks beautiful. Bear in mind there aren't too many places to eat or drink in the area so you must bring your own supplies but the kitchen is very well equiped and immaculate. And this... More

A beautiful, tranquil place, run by two of the nicest hosts you're ever likely to come across, Grae and Nancy. It doesn't really feel like a backpackers, it feels more like your own home. Spotlessly clean, with excellent cooking facilities. Plentiful hot water and electricity. It proves that eco-lodges can be efficient and don't have to be expensive. I hope... More

Arrived late afternoon, welcomed by Grae & Nancy, and shown to our cabin set aside with lovely bush and mountain views from bed. The amenities are good, no shortage of water or hot water, great to know all is eco-friendly and not going on the vegie garden. Lucky enough to have a meal prepared from garden vegies and salads, can't... More

Beaconstone redefines the meaning of hostel. The owners Grae and Nancy Stevens poured themselves into the building of this off-the-grid eco-lodge on the rugged West Coast of the South Island. It offers serenity from the well-beaten hostel route in New Zealand. It's the kind of place you want to stay for more than one night because... - a rejuvenating sleep...the... More

Beaconstone is a bit of a drive, but worth it! It is a small, eco-hostel, just a few minutes from New Zealand's gorgeous west coast. The rooms are simple, but clean, with enough space for 2 backpacks. The kitchen is spacious, with a cozy livingroom. The daytime toilets/showers are outside, bit adventurous, however, clean. Also, there is one bathroom inside... More

We booked at Beaconstone enroute to the Glaciers. Along the way we stopped at the seal colony which was nice. Although we did note that this is an Eco-lodge it was not the main issue for booking. This is not a big backpacker and there are only a few rooms which lends a cozy feel to everything. You can see... More

Stayed here for one night with my family. Nancy and Grae - the hosts were the warmest, most generous and open proprietors I have ever met. They built the place themselves and clearly it was a labour of love. Their house is all charm, and the lodge is really well designed with the perfect combination of privacy and communality. There...
