Funny place to spend the night. Having a single room in a former jail cel. Laundry facilities are good, toilet & showers could do with some TLC. Kitchen is great. You get a code to get in to the building and your room.

Stayed in a mixed dorm for 2 nights. I was rather impressed with the showering facilities and the beds as well. The bed was really comfortable and if you need extra blankets and pillows, you can ask reception and they'd be happy to pass you extras. The place is like a mini museum itself so highly recommended to check it out.

I arrived late this afternoon (5.40pm) at the jailhouse only to see a sign saying no checking in between 1pm and 6pm. I found that rather strange but asked a couple of people sat on the chairs near by what the deal was. They said there would be someone there to check them in at 6pm. I had just traveled from Wanaka (5/6 hours) with my two year old and he was tired and we wanted to get our stuff in our room and get settled after a long drive. I joked to the male and female and said "they've got it easy with a 5 hour break" when I returned at about 7pm after dinner it turns out the female who I was speaking to previously was the one that could have checked us in. I found this rather strange and feel she should have checked us in. She said "I don't get paid for this" or words to that effect. She obviously works for accommodation but she's representing this backpackers and I found her lack of care to be bad. I then asked if the room was available for two nights instead of one and she said $88, paid $66 online to which she seemed a little funny about. Overall the check in experience wasn't welcoming at all and she was awkward to say the least. It's a quirky place with it being an old jail and it's also clean but she needs to work on her hospo and ppl skills.…

The Jailhouse is a very well done transformation from a 100 year old jailhouse to a hostel. The rooms are the old prisoners’ cells. Even the shower rooms and restrooms were converted cells. There are sitting rooms and a kitchen. Checkin was pleasant and easy. The staff was very accommodating. Unlimited free WiFi. Lots of old memorabilia around. Definitely a unique experience.

Looking for another night in Christchurch and found this.. Very unusual and a good price! Short walk 20 minutes from the bus station, close to the Hagley Park. Arrived early and they let me store my bags and back at 17H friendly and helpful staff showed me around, nice big kitchen, cloths washing area, dining area plenty of showers too Room was a converted cell!! I hope they let me out .. All good, however some people walking and talking at night (2am) in the main area as is big the sound of footsteps and voice are amplified. Overall I would recommend

Whoever put this place together was masterful. The cells hold 6" more than a double bed - but who needs space? You're just sleeping. The high, barred window opens for ventilation. The thick concrete walls keep the building cool. The mattresses are excellent and the sheets are quality, and the duvet is fluffy and covered with, of course, grey and white stripes. The kitchen is full of great tools and the bathrooms are perfectly adequate. The atmosphere is quiet and full of young travelers - although there were two sixty something traveling couples. Stay here - everybody should be in jail once in life.
