My sister & I stayed into Hanh Chuong hotel for 5 days 4 nights at 15USD/nite, the hotel is definitely located at a hot spot famous for backpackers, for those of you who wants to enjoy nightlife in Vietnam, Pham Ngu Lao & Bui Vien street is the place for you. Plus, if you do not like the hotel that you are staying, that street is filled with other hotels offering more or less the same price; just a slight difference. There are also plenty of restaurant for you to choose from. When taking cab from the airport, remember to only hail cabs from either Vinasun or Mai Linh, I forgot which cab I took, but it only cost 102, 000 Dong from the airport to this hotel, another thing is to make sure, and double confirm that the cab charged by meter. This hotel has an English speaking receptionist, (I think this hotel is run by a family) so the receptionist is also the owner’s daughter. If you need any information, you can ask her. But if you need to change money, she can change money with you, BUT with a minimal fee. What I will suggest is to walk to the next street and change your money with the numerous money changers over there. They all have signs outside the store, so it would not be a problem spotting it. The hotel is overall not bad, nice place to stay plus great value for money. It comes with heater shower, air con, fridge and tv. Though it is stated that there is free wi-fi, but my sister & I couldn’t seem to get our hand phones connected to the web. However, always ask to see the room before checking into the room. Unfortunately for us, we were send to a room at fourth floor, and this hotel has NO lift, it used to have, but they have been relocated and now it has NO lift, so my sister & I have to take turn and drag our heavy luggage up four flight of stairs. Next time, ask them to place you at a lower room. The room has a window overseeing an old flat, so nothing to see, but great for those that loves to take pictures, cause the picture of people staying in old flat depict a certain significance, especially using sepia effect ;) The hotel is strategically positioned, is near to Ben Thanh market, about 20 minutes walking distance. MUST check it out, great food, great stuff, and great bargain! At day it is a wet market inside the mini clock tower building, at night, it is a night market with stalls open outside the building, and you can find various stalls offering lip-smacking seafood at very low price. Though the hawker does not speak English, it would be easier if you ask for a menu and point to whichever that looks the most appealing :) What my sister & I did was walk to somewhere near Nam Ky Khoi Ngia street, there is one travel agency over there, we went in there and help ourselves to the free map and we walk to most of the famous landmark. (Saigon Square, Opera, People Committee Hall, Diamond Plaza, Cathedral Notre-Dame, Central Post Office, Independence Hall & …) Great for sight-seeing and taking photographs. It took us whole day, we stated from Ben Thanh market for lunch and we walk a big round around the place and ended back at Ben Thanh night market for dinner. When we are tired then we would pop into the mall to rest and enjoy the air con, nothing much to shop actually, you can find all you want at Ben Thanh market. We also took the 1 day tour from “Tuan Travel” situated opposite the hotel, towards the end of the street. Is called the Mekong delta Discovery, from Saigon/ Ho Chi Minh to Mythro to Bentre and back to Saigon, it cost 7 USD. Basically very relaxing trip, visiting bee farm, sitting on horse carriage, visiting small village that produces coconut candy, and visiting lacquer products factory. If you have extra money and time in hand, I would suggest to go ahead, if that is not the case, then disregard it. If you want authentic Vietnamese noodle “Pho” there is this restaurant named Com Trua Van Phong at the corner before turning to the hotel street. The Pho is priced at only 20, 000 Dong. Or if you don’t mind spending a bit more, you can try its renowned contender, Pho 2000 restaurant which was honoured by a visit from Bill Clinton which is situated opposite Ben Thanh market (very commercialize I would say) My sister & I had most of our meals inside Ben Thanh market during the day and seafood for dinner. Try each menu everyday… Is cheap and definitely delicious …yum yum :)…
