This is definitely the prettiest hostel I've ever stayed in. Nestled on a residential street just outside of the downtown, it's the perfect distance from the lake with none of the downsides of sleeping in a city. The house itself is charming and old-fashioned, and the owners are incredibly sweet and eager to help. Nothing short of fantastic!

Absolutely lovely, great stuff, talking german as well. They are giving good advices and help wherever they an, even with rental cars. The house is lovely, the common kitchen has this oldscool flair. Its great to cook there. Ouside they have as well space for camping. So the people are really mixed up this gives a great atmosphere. We spent... More

If you want a quiet place, unexpensive, and in a family house, with a chilean family, this is the palce for you. is a hostel clean, small and modest rooms, a friendly owner. The breakfast can be small for a big guy but was enought for start the day. The best thing for me was the tours. You can ask... More

My husband and I stayed here for 3 days. We paid 27,000 per night and had hoped for a little something extra for our money. We felt like we were being squeezed for every extra penny they could get out of us. -Very noisy: the second night there was a party downstairs untill 1.30 am that the staff were involved... More

The hostel has comfortable rooms and plenty of charm. But to me there are many drawbacks. Long waits for the bathrooms, faulty lockers (mine had a huge gap at the back!), useless garden (serves as a parking lot/campground), expensive extras (examples: almost 1.5 euros for real coffee at breakfast; 10 euros for a load of laundry), faulty information (I was... Compass del Sur is up on a hill (close to centre of town) so it can be a trek if your luggage/backpack is heavy. You can either walk up a set of steps or walk up the inclined roadway. I came from Chiloe through Puerto Montt with Cruz del Sur bus and got dropped off at the edge of town... More

Ok, so to start with, this IS generally a reasonable hostel in an old interesting building. Communal areas nice and clean. Breakfast small portion and basic. Unfortunately our experience as marred by the general rip off attitude of the management: - Despite being members of the Ho.La hostel network we were told that not all Ho.La hostels offer a discount... I arrived in puerto Varas with the idea of staying 2 days and ended up staying 6. Partly because the weather was not very good when I arrived but mainly due to the fact that Compass del Sur was such a nice hostel. The dorm is big and the bed is extremely comfortable, the breakfast is free and very good,... More

This is an excellent choice, but book in advance. It is spacious, has lots of communal space and the rooms are large and clean. It has a certain charm, the chill out area was very comfortable and there are fires lit and the kitchen is well equiped and large. The breakfasts were basic however. Would recommend this!

We stayed here for two nights in May, being low season we where almost alone and had the kitchen and bathrooms to ourselves. We liked everything about this place: - most important: heating!! Anyone who has been travelling in Chile in winter knows that the houses are very chilly usually. The common areas where very nice and warm and the... More
