Checked into the "hostel" which is a storefront attached to a hotel. They seem to rent the old dilapidated rooms from the hotel they are situated near. Our reservation was lost. The room itself was filthy, smelled horrible, full of bugs. There was 1 bulb not burnt out in the light fixture the tub needed a scrub badly. We left almost immediately and booked at a much nicer place. Sam didn't seem to care either way. Avoid this place like the plague

Sam's guesthouse has the perfect location. Tianfu square is right around the corner. You are in the city center and places are within walking reach. The room itself was 'okay-ish'.The air conditioning was very unreliable. The bathroom had a western style toilet but that's the only plus. They bring hot water every morning, which is kind enough. Only we had a major jetlag so placed the sign 'do not disturb' on the doorknob, but they just ignored that completely... And they even opened the door to try and come in, so make sure your door is properly locked. (But even that is unreliable. Since they have a key to come in. So use the keychain lock to prevent them from barging in.)

We arrived at Sam's Guesthouse at about 3.30 a.m. Knowing that it has a 24 hours reception but for sure emailed the hostel about our late arrival. Expecting someone to let us in, we found the door closed and nobody to welcome us. We had to stay this night in another hotel.... Very inconvienent! Next day it costs us lots of talking to get this night payed by Sam's Guesthouse! The room we finally got was very fuzzy and old fashioned! It was smelly! We slept one night in this room and then moved to a bigger one. Still smelly en fuzzy! We stayed three nights there and for certain: never come back!!

Sam's guest house, my first in China - a museum like building tucked behind a large uninspired Chinese hotel, most convenient location 5 mins to Tianfu, restaurants and shops, market, on the same street, people's park two blocks, bed is hard, lights are dim, musky smell (so ever slight) noisy air conditioner, excellent value at $20, Star who checked me in was very helpful with information, more so than most Chinese hotels including holiday inn express..

We have been traveling some time now and are not complaining kind of people, but this hotel should hire a new cleaning staff and drop the prices! We stayed 3 days here because unfortunately the flipflop hostel was full and we disn't want to move avain. The bathroom was very dirty with long black hairs everywhere, for a bath you don't need the stop the water is stuck on all the hairs. I told the cleaninglady who did not understand, when telling the reception the bathroom was extra cleaned but the bath was still dirty, the bathroom also smells. The room was quite dark. At the last morning the cleaning personal was very loud around our room waking us at 7.30! The only upside is the location, but I would defenitely recommand flipflop over this lousy hotel. We used the laundry service which was very expensive, we could have slept another night for this money!! In flipflop the staff was very helpfull, cleaninglady always smiling and great breakfast! …

Sam's is unique and has style. It is also about as close to the center of Chengdu as one can get being only a block from Tianfu Square. Yes, it could do with a bit of TLC but maybe that is part of its charm. It is also very quiet which makes waking up in the mornings a problem. I would prefer an electric jug rather than the thermos. The staff are friendly and helpful. In all perhaps the best spot in Chengdu.

We stayed in a double ensuite room at Sam's and initially was quite comfortable - it's very convenient to the central parts of Chengdu and the garden courtyard is a nice change from the usual high rise accommodation in China. The rooms are obviously the old part of the big hotel next door, so a little retro in styling and unfortunately as a result they are a little tired looking. The shower was more of a trickle but it was hot. Our room was quite chilly most of the time, and with a Queen sized bed but only a double sized quilt, it made for some battles in the night! Service was brusque, and when we attempted to book a tour we didn't get much help and ended up just organising something ourselves (despite visiting reception a few times). There was one lady who was lovely but the rest of the staff could so with some customer service training, even by Chinese standards! Free in-room wifi was handy.…

The location and the building is very nice. Also the garden is convenient to drink and read. But the rooms are quite old, beds are hard and the price is not that attractive. We stayed a couple of nights and switched to flip flip, witch is much better!

I stayed for 4 days in this Hotel. With my son (13) and a friend of mine. We had 2 double rooms. Well the rooms are not the newest, but our was quite big and o.k. The beds were a Little hard.. the Girls at the "reception" were allways very Kind and verry helpful. We loved this place also because of ist lovely and peacefull garden. Unfortunately the small kitchen was closed that days, and so we could not eat or have breakfast there. But we allways sited in the nice terrace in the nice garden and nobody from the neighbour Hotel / restauant ever asked us to leave. So we bought sometimes our own food in the near Shops and eat there. I think in China we had one of the most relaxed days in this Guesthouse - most because of the lovely Crew (speaking very well english) and because of the nice time spent in the courtyard. Just close to the guesthouse we had every day a wonderfull massage in a small place with fantastic, kind and funny women. The Location of the guesthouse is fantastic - it's in the Center and you can reach everything easyli. I realy recomand this guesthouse - but don't expect to much luxury. You will get all the help you need to visit the places you like. Great!…

I will say this, the next time I am in Chengdu I will stay here. Not because it was the best hotel , or because it was the cleanest hotel, but because it was comfortable, very affordable and has a beautiful shaded courtyard in which one can sit for hours and work or sit and talk without feeling crowded. The buildings and courtyard are very old architecture adding to the ambiance.
